I have found that using big words either vocally or in writing often backfires and when in a conversation or lecture people either turn away or fall asleep. I have often found myself just looking at the person and thinking, "why don't you just use plain English?" The opposite end of that is text speak. Boy sometimes when I get a text from the grandaughters, I am scratching my head.

Not using large words because you are worried other people might think you are stupid seems as pointless as using them for the same reason, no? But really how one can best communicate all comes down to whom one is talking to and in what social context i suppose.

Good point, Fumobici. Also, if people can be offended if they think that you're dumbing down your vocabulary on their account.

Good point, Fumobici. Also, if people can be offended if they think that you're dumbing down your vocabulary on their account. But only if they realise it in the first place.

The mark of an excellent politician is the different choice of words for different audiences.
