It looks like some sort of crab spider Bixa...we get them here too...they feed on flies etc that visit the flower.

In your first pic, is that some sort of mantis? isn't it cute ? (are they the species where the female eats the male ;D)

It took me the longest time to make out the mantis in the first bixa picture. Wonderful "capture" as they say.

You all are so nice -- thanks! (& yes, mantis) Tod, I've never seen a grasshopper like that! We have red & black ones, but not so fancy. Super pic of the bee in the clog, Cheery. Good thing you saw it!

Oh ~~ more than pretty! Super photos, Cheery. (even if they did push mine to the previous page *) I love how you caught the dittiditdotdash of its antennae. What is that flower it's on in the first pic, please? * just kidding about the , but I do want to remind people that if they click on the or the thread title within a board, they'll be taken to the place where the new post(s) start, even if it's on a previous page.

Amazing picture, Thill. And you can almost hear him grunting with the effort of hoisting himself up.

lovely bee.... I was creeping around the garden with a camera again... red tailed bumble bee on an astrantia tiny two spot ladybird an unusual black ladybird..not rare...but I haven't seen many recently I'm not certain...but these may be the dreaded harlequin ladybird....they seem quite aggressive and rear up when you get near to them....they are much bigger than the usual ones we get (and prey on them)

Beautiful. There is a false belief in France that ladybugs have 7 spots.

Very cute bug Bixa - at first glance I made him out to be a 'stinkbug' but then thought it could be quite a large afid?!

Definitely a true "bug", with the shield on its back. Can't quite make out where the eyes are, though, since the antennae seem to exit the eye stalks...

That picture is greatly magnified. You could hardly see the bug if the flower was shown in its real size. I think the eyes are the bigger bulges behind the protuberances holding the antennae. Along came a spider .........

Along came a spider ......... I could be mistaken but I think that's the shed exoskeleton of a spider left behind.

That's what I would have thought, too, but it scurried up and down its web as the big scary giant loomed toward it with the camera. It was a teensy little thing.
