It is the sun setting behind the Arc de Triomphe in the direct axis of the Champs Elysées.

Here are two spur of the moment pictures that I took last week as I was leaving the supermarket. The photos were taken with my cell phone so the quality isn't great but the sunset really was breathtaking. The first is a view westward: This one is the view towards the east:

I dunno -- I think the quality is great!
And you're right -- it's breathtaking.

Good grief! I actually gasped when I saw the first picture. That's about as pretty as anything I've ever seen, Imec.

Yeah well, it was a consolation prize - what I really wanted was a picture of the bald eagle that flew through the yard. There has been a nesting pair close by for the last couple of years and i never have the damn camera out when one flies through. The sky really was beautiful at suppertime though.

Imec, the subtle mix of pink and blue in your sky is extraordinary.

Thanks - and believe it or not, I didn't mess with it using photoshop. Supposed to be sunny for the next week so may see more of this - and other treats if I have my camera ready . Oh, and I nearly forgot - maybe some photographic treats will be on the menu in Quebec City next Thursday... (not a business trip either!)

Thanks - and believe it or not, I didn't mess with it using photoshop. Good point, Imec. I think everyone here is putting up unadorned pictures. Really, they wouldn't "count" in a thread like this if they were altered, would they? I have a blog saved that I send to people who have a bunch of questions about Oaxaca and the food here. However, I always have to mention that it's over the top visually. The author takes fantastic pictures, but couldn't resist the impulse to tinker with many of them. It's pretty and colorful here, yes, but the sky is not navy blue or turquoise, and buildings aren't painted in Day-glo. Sure, adjust the picture a little bit if it comes out too dark or too glary, but real life looks better than a cartoon world.

I think everyone here is putting up unadorned pictures. Really, they wouldn't "count" in a thread like this if they were altered, would they? Well, it's a tough call. When people mess with the settings on their camera for colour, light etc. it's actually "pre-photoshopping" them. With my new camera, I'm shooting in RAW mode - which produces a very pure image which can be adjusted for lighting, colour etc. later - so the same effect as adjusting the camera before you shoot but without the guessing involved. Most of my images are posted with little or no adjustment. The crazy moon pic I posted was definitely photoshopped - but it was completely an experiment anyway - I placed a 25 year old, non-autofocus lens on the new camera and fired away. The colours were of questionable accuracy even on the non PS'd image. And remember, when we see something in real life, our brain actually does some photoshopping of its own - so what we "see" is often different than the actual image captured. In the end, it all boils down to what one is trying to say with the picture. Judicious use of Photoshop is really no different than a judicious choice of words...

Well, as I said above, I'm not anti-fixing. Often the pictures needs dickering in order to look more like what we saw. That's no different than cropping or fixing contrast in order to make a better picture.
It's the blasting colors into super-saturation on everything that is tiresome and in a thread like this one, sort of cheating. I enjoyed your photos above all the more knowing that they were "pure".

Very nice, Deyana! The last two look as though they were done in sequence. Not a criticism, but why don't you post your pictures bigger? The sky is BIG.

Thanks Bixa!
Well, I don't post them that big anymore because, I thought it might take some computers too long to load them up and display them.
