I didn't know shrews were so small, thinking they were more rat-sized.

Shrews are indeed tiny -- like small mice but with pointy faces.

We occasionally have hedgehogs in the garden too. They are certainly good to have as little garden helpers. I had understood that if they are out and about during the day, they are sick.

Cinghiale I met on the trail about an hour ago. There's nothing for scale but trust me, it's a huge one!

Me either! Looks huge. Did you turn around and go the other way, or did you scare it off?

I took the snap and then clapped my hands, which was sufficient to persuade him/her to yield the right-of-way.

Lucky, lucky, lucky! I would so love to see a fox. That guy is a beauty. I don't know if that is a brush pile or berry canes in the foreground, but they obviously make a place for a fox to feel secure.

The owner died last spring and the house has been empty ever since so the garden is very overgrown. It’s next to where I work and I’d gone in to see how much the Wisteria had come over and disturbed him hiding under the brush.

There is no way that they would allow you to get that close to a seal pup in France. The mother would stop you anyway.

This pup and another I photographed had eschewed the family group and moved up to the viewing area ( no longer dependent upon their mothers) They were literally just a couple of feet away from where humans were allowed. . There were volunteer rangers about to ensure the seals were not disturbed so I asked one why these pups chose to get up close to humans. I was told that it was the clever pups that did this as the bulls are so aggressive at this time of year and they want to stay away from them ... humans are the lesser choice of two evils. Anyway the pups were happy and everyone was respectful. Unfortunately some of the pups were not so clever and the bulls are brutal to them. I will post more in a thread about this.
