As a footnote to the story of "our geese"... they're no longer with us. It appears all of the young were killed by predators and the parents, having no further reason to be here, have moved on. The circle of life is indeed both beautiful and brutal.

*sigh* I used to live on a canal off the Gulf of Mexico which was heavily populated by ducks. As we'd fondly watch the mommy ducks being followed by their fluffy yellow offspring, there would be miniature reenactments of the opening scene of Jaws.

imec, it's sad to hear about the baby ducks. Yeah, the circle of life and all that...

There are local eagles that are very proficient at hunting waterfowl and I've seen them take ducks from the water and carry them off screaming. It's a fascinating sight but certainly not a pretty one. I'd love to be lucky enough to capture the drama with my camera, but it's probably not likely to happen.

We have some hawks that come and snatch the purple martin babies from the houses we provide...the first time I saw it happen I was on our balcony and started yelling at the hawks....so ridiculous, I must have looked and sounded...didn't phase the hawks one bit.

Awwww. People say things like "silly goose", but they really do have a presence and dignified bearing. There are 13 babies. Maybe they all survived!

This doe was far less timid than they usually are. I was walking dogs with my neighbor, and she advanced on us, nervous about the dogs. No doubt she had a fawn hidden nearby. We got out of there quick - whitetail deer moms have been known to kick a dog to death.

I love it when animals pose for pictures. Normally they like to ruin pictures by moving right at the last moment.

That's how a baby meerkat looks? Too precious. And it's looking up at its mommy.
