They were out in numbers last night, the coyotes. And here in the East they are big. I'd say at least twice the size of the ones I saw in the West. Ofcourse my dog ran out to chase them away, but I soon brought her back in, I don't feel that she is safe with so many of them out there. Still at least their annoying yelping, barking noises are not as scary as the growling I hear outside once in a while. I've been told that is probably the bob cats, but it sounds just like a cougar to me. Anyway, I thought you might all be interested to know

Interesting. Do you live in an extremely rural area? Is there a coyote food shortage? We get jackals here I've only seen one in the wild.

The poor coyotes get squeezed out of their habitats by the encroachment of human beings. You could see them occasionally on top of the dunes in S. Padre Island, Texas. One of my favorite Michael Connelly books, The Last Coyote, has a real coyote in it who does double duty as metaphor.

hwinpp, I'm not sure. I know in the winter months they get more desperate for food. Two winters a go I found one frozen in a ditch, probably 'drowned' in the snow trying to get out of the ditch.
A neighbor told me they nearly got her 2 years old, she saw a bunch of them surrounding her son, and had to chase them away.
Oh and yes, I live in a rural area, miles of forests around here.

Of course we have them here in Az. A few months ago we were walking to the mailbox(its one of those gang ones) and loping down the street toward the wash was one with a rabbit in its mouth. Just looked at us and continued down the little road dip and into the wash.

Yep, they are can be very confident around us humans, I guess they don't have much choice at times though.
Bixa, it was very scary for the little boy and mom and it made me think twice about letting my own kid wonder around after dark, even in the backyard. The other thing is I never let my cats out at night time, my neighbors have lost so many, they just simply disappear...

They woke me up again last night. There must have been quite a large number of them out in the back garden, yelping away. My gosh, do they sound creepy....

Just wait until the full moon when they will execute their master plan.
