What could be better? I found this interview on line with Frances Osborne. She's written a book about her great-grandmother, a ra-cha-cha member of Kenya's Happy Valley set in the 1920s. Has anyone read it yet? I'd love to get my hands on her two books. The first one was Lilla's Feast. Absolutely click on the picture in the link and go forward to the prologue. This looks like fascinating stuff! The new book is The Bolter, with what promises to be an equally compelling real-life heroine.

Do any books exist WITHOUT adultery? Even the bible is supposed to be full of it.

I read the review in the NY Times some weeks ago and was intrigued. A very racy crowd she was with eh? I believe the review said that they felt the GGD,author went a bit overboard in her romanticizing of deplorable behavior department. I'd be willing to give it a go as I generally like this type of bio. It does get tricky when it's a relative or someone close to the subject. I found this to be the case with Nigel Nicholson in his biography of his parents(Nicholson and SackvilleWest).

Oooo I hadn’t seen this and Casimera pointed it out – I am loving this book at the moment. Totally sucked in! Yes, some of the behaviour might be considered deplorable, but certainly never boring and makes great reading...

The murder of Lord Erroll has, in my view, never been satisfactorily explained. It was attributed to Lord Broughton who later committed suicide...but who knows? Diana Broughton went on to become Lady Delamere.
I don't think murder was the order of the day in Happy Valley although there was at least one suicide, one woman killed herself rather than grow old and lose her good looks... There was plenty of adultery and sexual carry-on...and why not? These people had everything, money, high connections, titles, beauty, wonderful surroundings, servants, big houses ...... By the time I arrived at the Muthaiga club (1974-76) I was certainly let in although my Indian husband was not! and ladies are still not permitted to enter the sacrosanct mens' bar. I wouldn't dream of going there wearing jeans. Actually I loved the Muthaiga club which oozes the atmosphere of colonial dalliance. I also love the Norfolk hotel (husband not allowed in the swimming pool area, only for white)....ha ha
*ha ha - because he was so bad to me*

Revenge is sweet, spindrift If he was bad to you, I can't blame you for feeling that way.

After Tilly's reminder, I just ordered White Mischief on Amazon. I almost bought The Bolter too but then decided it would be too much.
