Doesn't it seem that most people are guided by ignorance? What kind of guide is that? (I am not excluding myself, of course.)
When I think of all of the times that everybody says "no" out of ignorance, there must be a hell of a lot of missed opportunities.
"Do you want to try this?" "I don't know what it is. No, thank you."

"Oh, I know I wouldn't like that."
How? How would you know that?

K - you are so right. I am very mindful of the deeply-conditioned response 'no'...and nowadays I catch myself just before I say 'no' and I change to 'yes'.... and this goes for other people's opinions too. Well, at least I listen and try to understand.

About oysters: I had a bf who was a Royal Marine (tough bloke)...on a visit to France I ordered oysters. The waiter offered them to toughguy who baulked at the thought of eating one. The waiter persisted and finally TG admitted to us that he was 'afraid' to eat one. So this is what it comes down to. People are afraid they'll eat one and be seen to vomit or choke?

That same ignorance is passed on to children by parents. I see it all the time.

I had to unlearn a few things from my childhood, perhaps fewer than most, so I consider myself relatively lucky.

Heroin is something I wouldn't try, even once. I might try ketamine though.

Well, actually, the heroin statement didn't make me laugh, because the day it was offered, I tried it. I just had to know. Now I can warn people away from it and know what I'm talking about.

I used to have a pretty good knowledge of the psychotropics as I needed to know what my clients affect was due to. Now they're coming out with new ones daily. The anti-depressant du jour, the anti-psychotic...... I would have felt like I was really getting somewhere in therapy one day and the next day the client came in all zombied out with little or no recollection of the previous session.

I don't know what ketamine is....only I heard on Radio 4 that it isn't addictive and gives one a 'high' with no after effects. Well....it's only a thought. I'm unlikely to induge. VERY unlikely.

I tend to prefer saying yes more than no plus saying no seems mean to me in cases where you could just say yes and then everyone is happy. Not interested in drugs though.

I always feel kind of personally rebuffed if I offer somebody something new & they won't even try it.

I was thinking that I would never try lamb intestines, a friend of mine insisted me that I would love it if I ever try, I was so sure about the result but I said ok.
It was 19 years ago, now it is one of my favorite.
I got my lesson at the age of 13.

It took me about 20 years to try blood sausage, but it really does have a visual problem. It remains the only completely black colored item that I eat. I can't think of any other black food item anyway.

Calamares en su tinta is pretty black.
Cuitlacoche is black, but not something you'll have to worry about stumbling across all the time.

i think things i would have difficulties with are things that look slimy. like worms or slugs. but i might try them anyway, it'd just take me a moment...
oh, one thing i might not try is sausages. though then again i have tried a little bit of some when told they are special etc. ... but i tend to dislike sausages for their texture, and also a lot of them tend to make me feel sick....

Wow, Rikita -- can't you get stripped of your German citizenship for that? I know you are not picky because I read about your time in Peru and how you tried everything. Sausages, huh?
