I had a salad of tomatoes, onions, cubed chicken, a little bit of poblano pepper, and a few grapefruit slices. For dessert I had rice pudding I made from the rice I'd made for lunch but somehow managed to mess up.

For both lunch and dinner, I managed to finish various leftovers, so I will be happy to make something new today -- I just hope that I don't make as much of it.

I also made some hummus tahini and a bit of taboulé, the latter limited by a dearth of edible tomatoes. I managed to find two overripe bio ones (reduced price); they were about the only ones I could find juicy enough for taboulé.

LaGatta, if you are just dying for taboulé and there are no decent tomatoes to be had, try substituting cucumbers. Of course they don't taste like tomato, but they do add that essential fresh raw vegetable taste and juiciness.. I always assume with iconic dishes from various parts of the world that people routinely make such substitutions with whatever is in season.

I was still not able to do new stuff tonight, because there was still some red cabbage salad to finish, a couple of cheeses and some head cheese. Maybe tomorrow. I always used to be totally dismayed by friends with very sparse contents in their refrigerator but now I envy them.

Put a pork loin roast into the slow cooker early this morning that I had gotten on sale for $4.52. I did nothing but season it well with garlic and pepper, it was tasty with enough left over for some sandwiches tomorrow. I put some frozen fries in the oven and made a Caesar salad.

Yes, slow cookers and their descendants can be a great help.
Happy year of the pig, by the way!

Tonight I had frankfurters and oven fries. I am still not a fan of oven fries, but I absolutely did not feel like preparing a big pot of oil.
The package of frankfurters said that for small children, they had to be sliced lengthwise and then cut up into very small pieces "to reduce the risk of choking." If there is such a risk, I think that children should be breastfed until at least age 6.

I cooked a small gammon joint basted with honey. We had it with new potatoes, salad and coleslaw. A bit of a treat as we're not eating much processed food these days so sausages, bacon etc are not on the menu very often. Leftover gammon and potatoes will go unto a frittata tomorrow.

lagatta, I always enjoy hearing about what you do with duck. It encourages me to look for duck in the supermarket, but it's very expensive here so it's been a long time since I bought any. I'll just continue to envy you.

In general, only the magret de canard (fat duck breast) interests me. It is a bit expensive here, but there is regularly a promotion on it, and that's when I buy it. Then again, when I say it is "expensive" it is probably about the same price as beef, so there you go. (But I always think poultry -- chicken, turkey -- is a cheap meat so why should I pay double or more for duck?)
Tonight, I'm afraid it's going to be entrecôte and oven chips. Not feeling inventive and also a bit lazy. And I do love entrecôte. Maybe a bit of salad, too.

Omelette...we were feeling lazy too. I had ham and cheese, Jeff just ham.
I went to an 'organic' farm shop yesterday and got a load of lovely big fresh eggs. Chicken...we cant manage duck or goose these days...too rich.

Last night I had chili con carne... out of a tin. But I added a few other items (chopped green onion, cilantro, some extra spices...) and the end result was not bad, all things considered.

There is no reason that couldn't be good tinned, but I'm a bit wary of any French "Mexican" or "Tex-Mex" foods.

red beans 34%, beef 10%, tomato concentrate 6.3%, red & green peppers 5.1%, corn 3.6%, onions, sugar, salt cumin, flour, coriander, "natural flavours," celery, paprika, Cayenne pepper.
The strange ingredient in all French chili con carne is corn.

That one was from Leclerc. I found that I have a tin from Carrefour and it says this:
red beans 33%, beef 15%, tomato concentrate, bell peppers, corn, onions, sugar, salt, spices (cumin, coriander, red pepper), wheat flour, garlic powder, natural flavours, celery powder, food colouring, paprika
For ingredients shown without percentages, they are supposed to be in descending order.

That made me look on the internet for the ingredients of a major American brand. Here is Hormel Chili with Beans:
(I didn't list the water from my tins, but water was in first place, too.)
