I came home from the gym to hear hammering and banging coming from my roof, letting me know the workmen have started the job of ripping out and replacing all the rotten wood. Even if they are extremely lucky with the weather, the racket is bound to be heard daily for the next couple of weeks. While I'd like to be away as much as possible, I've got a lot of inside work to do, so I'm kind of stuck with the noise. Hopefully, listening to music will help some.

You should be kept busy, ensuring that the supply of tea or coffee doesn't give out.

Some people down the street from me are having a party or a wake or something. It features a male singer with a gratingly reedy voice and a keyboardist. I've closed my doors and windows, but since they are using the second of the only two volumes available in Mexico, I can't blot it out completely.

as it is sunday, it is not quite as loud as the last nights, but there are some people shouting and laughing loudly occasionally. also, when there is a car you can hear that the road is wet from rain.
eta: also, just now there was the sound of glass breaking, so i suppose the people i hear shouting are drinking on a park bench or something similar and i will find some new remains of beer bottles there tomorrow ...

That doesn't sound too pleasant.
Update on my sound: a different group is playing now, in fact playing one of my all-time favorite songs, Caminos de Michoacán.

Footsteps up on the rooftop terrace, letting me know the men are back at work. They still have a lot to do before they'll be finished.

I was washing my old car at a do-it-yourself car wash and the guy in the next stall over washing his pickup was playing his Mexican music so loud it was probably audible from a low earth orbit. I did kind of dig the song, though.

After having lots of noisy, happy humans, I have a brief respite as they visit family elsewhere. It's very quiet here right now. Just me and the dog, waiting for the wind and rain heading our way.

I did kind of dig the song, though. The noise level in Mexico has never ceased to amaze and appall me. It's very odd, too, in that Mexicans appear to have the hearing of bats and generally do not speak loudly. It's quite common to go to parties and give up on talking to anyone because it's too hard to hear over the music.

earlier today a guy with a very annoying voice on the square outside giving speeches about how he wants to get rid of the law that there has to be quiet at night, and also other things, and that people should vote for him, all mixed with stupid jokes. there were even one or two things he said i might agree with, but the rest was so stupid, i felt he was doing the good things a disservice ... and especially his argument for the right to make noise at night - people should not move into noisy areas (no mention that this area only has lots of pubs and thus nightly noise since a few years ago, so many people already lived her before - anyway, i was considering going down there to tell him i am happy with him making lots of noise at midnight as long as he tells me where he lives and lets me be noisy in front of his window at 6 a.m. every morning ...)

I don't know if anyone remembers, but I once posted a clip from Mozart in the Jungle because my landlord's daughter was in it. She is a violinist studying in Mexico City, but is home for the holidays right now. The house next door to me, also owned by her parents, is empty right now & they are over there fixing it up. She, meanwhile, is playing her violin there, with the emptiness and high ceilings affording the most wonderful acoustics. Her playing is exquisite.

there was noise from fireworks earlier, but now it stopped. we won't be here tomorrow, which is good, gets much too noisy here - at my mom's the houses are further apart, so while you still hear the fireworks, they are less annoying ...

A neighborhood marching band, mostly drums, practicing for some Carnival parade. I've been hearing them practice for weeks now from a distance but today they took to the streets marching, adults and children alike. They have gotten pretty good.

Construction noises from both the front of our house and from the rear. It has been going on for months now. They start at 7 a.m.
This morning was a jack hammer in the front and a circular saw in the rear...

Whereas sometimes I grind my teeth at the slowness of local construction, after reading Casimira's post I am sort of appreciating the sounds of a construction project coming from two doors down: hand shoveling of debris.

Nobody can make big noise here until 8 a.m. but then it starts with a vengeance. Plumbers are currently working on my building changing all of the incoming water pipes and quite a few of the drainage pipes. Drills, hammers, electric saws, blow torches all day long. I must admit that it does not bother me at all since I live in the section behind the super thick walls so I can only hear the din if I get close to my entrance door. Oddly enough, my apartment was the only one in the building that required absolutely no modifications. However, the plumbers have rung my doorbell a couple of times to test my faucets and then today to check my drainage. Tomorrow I have been requested not to use my bathroom for most of the day, because the central drainpipe is being changed at the back of the building. Luckily, my kitchen and WC are on the other side of the building and are not affected, so it is just a tiny inconvenience. But changing the drainpipe out in the corridor is sure to be noisy.

Oh, that's interesting that you are the only one who won't have to put up with the plumbing disruption inside your own home. Is it because you updated the plumbing more recently than your neighbors?

No, the plumbing is exactly as it was when I bought the place, but the same copper pipes are being used, so they just connected mine to the new pipes in the hallway. The other apartments on my floor have all undergone major modifications which seem to require new connections now. As for the lower floors, I have no idea why everything has been changed. All of the corridors are looking like a steampunk fantasy now because in a building like this, when new pipes are installed, they all remain outside the walls. (Yes, there will be photos.)
