That genius Kerouac found the packing thread. I guess he has a good memory because he is so much younger than I. ;D

Dinner plans thwarted by the rain as we were going to have a light picnic supper at the park listening to the LA. Philharmonic. They played this time last year and it was the most lovely of evenings. Many, many neighbors and folk from other parts of town. So,dinner will be a light fare of the bread and cheese, salami, accompanied by some black bean soup I made this a.m.

Last night was salmon fillets on a bed of creamed chopped leeks, surrounded by baby vegetables, covered with a lemon butter sauce.

Tonight will be smoked herring; roast shoulder of lamb, potatoes and aubergine; and strawberries from the market (I forget which variety).

Sounds like you have settled into your new kitchen nicely baz. How do you find it ?

I find the cooker horrendous. It has a gas hob. You turn the dial for each ring then press to get the electric spark to light it. Fine. Release the pressure on the knob and the gas goes out. It is necessary to hold it down for about 10 seconds before you can be sure it will stay lit. One of the rings doesn't light at all. The extractor fan is broken. The oven has been fine so far but I am not sure how accurate the thermostat is. Mrs Faz will be baking a cake in a couple of weeks and I expect squawks of dismay.
The fridge is huge - but it has no ice compartment. So we have bought a small freezer for the kitchen. There is a big chest freezer in the shed but who wants to go out there for an ice cube?
There are plenty of cupboards. I still sometimes forget where I have put things. The top shelves of the cupboards are just within my reach but Mrs Faz either has to call me or fetch some steps.
Lights are just about adequate. There is a big island that separates the kitchen and dining areas which we approve of very much. First thing we did, before unpacking, was get the removal men to shift the island to make the dining area bigger.
There is only one sink and that is huge. So we use a plastic bowl in that and rinse dishes under the tap.
Plentiful use of blue tiles just like our old kitchen - so it feels familiar.
All in all the kitchen will be OK.

Sunday is usually a late lunch (after 15h) so today we had a tagine - spicy meatballs in tomato sauce with eggs cooked in the tagine. the lot served on a bed of bulgur wheat.

Am crossing my fingers that Mr. C. will make the spaghetti and meatballs he mentioned last p.m. His football team has a BYE this week so that annoyance is out of the way. I am really in the mood for this. I think I hear some pans clanging downstairs. I will offer to run out into the rain to get the basil and bay leaf!

Baz, the lines to your burners may be blocked with carbon. See if you can get a recommendation for a good plumber who will give you an estimate of what it would cost to clean the stove into good working order. Do you have an oven thermometer?
You are lucky the island was movable!

I alredy know what we'll be having for "dinner" (comida, 1:30 p.m today.) A friend just got out the hospital and she requested some of my home cooking. To help her on the road to recovery, we are bringing to her, at her home, some 5-6 miles away: • Sweet and Sour Stuffed Cabbage Rolls • Mashed Potato casserole • Homemade Caraway Rye Bread • Apfel kuchen
The cabbage rolls were done yesterday; the apfel kuchen just came out of the oven (and it's very buttery), and the potatoes are now boiling.

I had my dinner a little while ago: tasajo (thinly sliced salty beef), cubed steamed beets dressed with thyme, basil, and garlic smushed together + vinegar & olive oil, and some roquette cooked in the beet-steaming water. All was topped with raw white onions. I was pretty happy.

I was planning some "open lasagne" i.e. lasagne sheets, with a pumpkin filling/sauce, but bf came home stating he was not hungry as he had a humongous carvery at lunch with his colleagues, so don't know what to do for myself.

We had cold roast lamb from last night with some salads. For a starter I made something simple I had decades ago on a walking holiday in Normandy. We stayed in a small town at the Hotel President so I always think of it as Jambon President. It is simply a slice of ham rolled up and put in a baking dish. Mushrooms sliced and fried then mixed with cream and put on top of the ham. Grated gruyere on top, Put under the grill until it is bubbling and brown. Fruit salad to finish.

Stir fried bloccolli with roast pork and a dry fish curry. We bought stingray at the market on Sunday. We want to make it for dinner, any ideas? I assume the leatherish skin needs to be taken off before preparation. My girlfriend wants to steam it, I want it fried. What would you suggest?

I eat fish any way it is prepared, but I am more of a fan of steamed to make sure I can taste the flavor.

Tonight I made Irish potato boxty with mushy peas and sort of a grated roasted beet salad involving lots of garlic, walnuts and sour cream.

What is boxty?

Boxty is kind of a potato pancake type thing. But more like a pancake than a potato pancake which is more like a hashbrown! lol ... It was kind of bland really. But the beet salad was great. The recipe I had in mind was that of "Odessa Beets" from the Moosewood Cookbook, which you can find online I think.

I made a starter from a recipe my daughter sent:basically green lentils as a base, then crumbled goat cheese,t hen baked beetroot which was cubed. Lots of different stuff to perk it up, Really good. Except. I baked the beetroot than started to take off the skin and aaaaargh! The skin was red but the flesh was white. The dish simply didn't look right.

My nephew has become addicted to goat cheese in 5 days. I have no idea why but American goat cheese does nothing for me. Only the ripened French kind like the little pyramids will serve.
