The population of Africa has reached 1 billion this year, up from 250 million in 1950.
25% of the children in the world are born in Africa. The birth rate is 4.6, compared to the world average of 2.5. 43% of Sub-Saharan Africans are under the age of 15.
6 million babies are born in Nigeria every year, compared to a total of 5 million for the entire European Union. Uganda is the youngest country in the world, with 56% of the population under the age of 18.
Life expectancy in Africa is 53 years. This is 16 years more than in 1950.
The Maghreb is very different from the rest of Africa, with a birth rate of 2.3 in Algeria and 1.9 in Tunisia (lower than France).
The birth rate is declining in some of the Sub-Sahara countries as well. 5.0 in Kenya, compared to 8.0 thirty years ago and 4.5 in Senegal, compared to 7.0 twenty-five years ago.
Only 30% of young Africans make it to secondary school.
