I couldn't think where to put these but as they are mainly wood I thought here would be best. As we have little building left to do on the house in Spain, and I've made or we've bought all the furniture we need, I've been at a bit of a loose end. We did have some tiles re-laid around the pool, mainly because the land underneath them has settled and cracked a few. Apart from that I tend to go and stand in my workshop and try and think about what I can make. A bit like the husband going and spending time down in his shed - though porn mags don't play a part in this. I was looking at the wood I've got left and trying to conjure up what I could do with it. We don't need these and have no room for them either, but never mind, I'm sure two bedside tables, a coffee table and a "thing" (no idea what to call it) will come in useful one day. My authority doesn't stretch to what the wood stain, varnish or paint colour will be. I can make suggestions but Mrs M has the final and usually only word about it. I find for a happy marriage we can spend a lot of time discussing things, different points of view, different priorities..... but then I just agree with whatever she said. Makes life so much easier. I know she says I have only two faults. I don't listen to her.... and.... something else. These, then, are in their raw state and you'll have to imagine what they'll be like when they have some varnish/stain on them -

Do we know about this style of chair? I know them as Malawi chairs, even though the name when doing a google search always turns up the cane type. We can get these all over Zambia and the further you go away from Malawi, e.g. to South Africa, obviously the more expensive they get. If buying one in Europe........ no idea but they'd be about $20 - $50 in Malawi, depending on size. This was in a small one mainly for decoration. It's not mine by the way, just one in the apartment we are renting. What the history is of these or if they are truly just made in Malawi(doubt it for sure) but even though I'm tripping up over them all the time, I know little about them. I have seen my groups buy them in Malawi and that is about it. Simple design First take two bits of wood, joined planks or whatever. Make a few slots/holes and strengthen the relevant parts - Decorate/carve the "good" side - Slot one piece through the other and there you are -

I've seen those at friend's places and in thrift stores, bought as souvenirs and never used. They look super uncomfortable and impractical to me. I think they have something similar in SE Asia somewhere.

Those chairs are very common in West Africa... and in the African artisanal shops in Paris. However, the elaborate carvings on the chair that you show increase the value considerably, so I would not even guess at the price here.

Post number 273 above - on consultation with Mrs M about the colours of the bedside tables, coffee table and 'Thing' now she has seen them in the flesh, as it were, the bedside tables have had a very thin coat of white so you can still see the wood through it, the coffee table has been done brown but looks crap so we need to change it, and the Thing has has a couple of coats of stain and varnish. It shines more than is in the photo and the top is all nicely coloured wood, but can't see it from this angle -

A bit better photo and one of the bedside tables and coffee table. The coffee table looks like it's been crapped on. Mistake buying that colour so that'll have to be changed when I nip to the DIY store tomorrow.

I would love to have an old card file cabinet but I'm not sure what I would do with it. I'm sure that thousands of card file cabinets from pre-internet libraries have found new homes. And even more of them went to the trash heap.

"Card file cabinet" - I'll have to start calling it that instead of 'the thing'.

Oh dear, the photos won't come up……. I'll check back later but in the meantime I must tell all you office (white collar workers), that my husband got sick and tired of having to stand up from the desk and computer, to walk over and retrieve a file from the filing cabinet. So, he invented a nifty lille portable filling cabinet that held any file like Lever Arch etc.,. It has four sides and moves around the office on castor wheels. You only have to wheel it over to the desk to start with and back to a "parking bay" in the office when you're done.

I would not have seen it for myself, but after reading Huckle's comment, I was delighted to catch the reference in this modern sculpture. Even without seeing a Degas connection, it is beautiful.

One thing that seems obvious to me is that it must have been done with a 3D printer or engraver. I don't think that any human being could have possibly chiseled the wood so precisely. That is not at all a criticism but rather a recognition of new ways to create art.
