So glad that kerouac's "nitpicking" brought these threads to my attention. Very nice. Unless there's a rule against posting the same picture in more than one thread, you should repost some of them in the reflections and clouds categories as well as the wood theme...

There is absolutely no rule against posting photos more than once, and I have done it a few times. But you have a good idea about going through some of the older photo essays to find photos that fit into some of the new photo bank categories. Since we have so many subjects now, everybody is sure to find new places to display some of the pictures. And I agree with Deyana, too.

I want to call attention to another AP thread that has lots of wood to look at. It is a thread that I might have missed had it not been called to MY attention: anyportinastorm.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=pictures&thread=2605&page=1#48094I would post a photo from it here, but since I didn't take the pictures, and this is an Image Bank thread, you'll just have to go see for yourself. But maybe the photographer can be prevailed upon to post one or two of her choices on here to whet your appetite...

Ay, Kimby ~~ you are kind! Thank you for this, since I immediately thought of these carvings when I saw the one Imec posted in the OP. I didn't know if I should be repeatedlyfoisting my photographic efforts on the innocent population of AnyPort, though. Thanks for the opportunity to let me show off! ;D And speaking of the OP, I suggest that we all remember to go back to the beginning of some of these threads to appreciate or re-appreciate what's in them. It's always nice to comment, too. Reassurance is good! Love the marquetry -- all that detail in a small space. What are the wonderful objects from the sea, please? Are they things from your travels?

What are the wonderful objects from the sea, please? Are they things from your travels? How did you know they were from the sea, bixa? They are mostly seed pods, and were collected off the beach in Puerto Morelos on the Yucatan peninsula and strung into a wall hanging by an older man who would not be bargained down from fine art prices. Mr. Kimby had to have it, and despite my protests that it would be horrendously difficult to get home, it now hangs in our study:

Yes, that is the classic cable spool that old hippies love to use as a coffee table. That one looks big enough to be a dining room table, though.

Thanks for the explanation, Mark. But what do you mean by 'road gang'?
Kerouac, yes I think it would make a good table, all it needs is a lick of paint.

Road gang is a group of workers who work on them digging them up and doing stuff like laying the pipes/cables underneath or alongside.

Was the wood someone's left over camp fire? I imagine wood in Egypt is hard to come by.

The clue was in the first line I wrote. Though it might have been a bit cryptic. The wood was very, very scared = petrified. It's very ancient wood that over time has turned to stone. It only takes about 100 years or so to make it petrified, but this 'wood' has been there far longer than that as there hasn't been savannah or forest in Egypt for ....errr..... thousands of years? I'll have to check.
All that's happened is someone recently has collected a few bits, not to burn as it doesn't, but as a surround for a fire. There are other pieces around, in fact far too many to count, they are all over the place.

From a quick search it seems the desert started to form about 6000 years ago, so this 'wood' could be as old as that if not older. You may have heard of a film/book called 'The English Patient', it relates to a cave in Egypt, in the south west corner called the Cave of the Swimmers - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cave_of_SwimmersIn the cave are drawings and carvings, called pictographs and petroglyphs, from up to 10,000 years ago from when the area was covered in savannah.

Thanks for all that information, Mark. It's all those posh words you use, they confuses me. So I guess, people are not allowed to move that wood or take it with them as a souvenir? Quote: from up to 10,000 years ago from when the area was covered in savannah.
I don't understand this. What is savannah?
