The home is actually an old one, in Milwaukee. The craftsman is probably long dead.

A nutcracker I bought as a gift in an antique shop yesterday. The proprietors tell me it was made in Austria in the early 1900's. I'll buy Austria, as that is stamped on the handle, but wonder how old it really is. It is no longer functional, as has been broken and reglued, but has a certain charm, don't you think?

It's absolutely adorable. I can see why you were drawn to it. It could be your house tomte.

Alas, it is not for our house. It is a gift for Mr. Kimby's cousin, who is helping us to furnish the new lake cottage. His lovely wife collects monkeys.
BTW, I'd never heard of a tomte, but am familiar with "brownies" who do good things around houses.

Interestingly, I could find nothing about "monkey nutcrackers from Austria" online, but when Mr. Kimby Googled it, he found a picture that he said looked "exactly like our monkey, and they even have OUR rug!"
Yup, this Any Port thread came up as a search result!

We are specialized in monkey nutcrackers from Austria. Google is wise.

Absolutely beautiful Kimby! It is remarkable how much your lake cottage is like our lake house, same ceiling except our wood is done in pine, but gosh, looks so similar. Guess we share the same type of life. Cheers! Mich P.S. our house is 40 years old though therfore, we have spent the last 12 years updating in into this century. I am sure you cannot wait for the end as do we.

Interesting decoration on top of the newel post. Is it permanent? Should I have removed the rocks before shooting the photo? I think the carpenter was weighting down the wood caps that had been glued in place.

Good reason then. I was worried you'd have a thought like when you put your keys down and can't find them, a sort of "I know I had that concrete block a minute ago. Now where the hell did I put it."

Those blocks of stone did give me grief when I decided the glue was dried and took them outside where they belong. I slipped on ice outside the door (no eavestroughs yet) and fell hard on my bum which now has a large technicolor bruise gracing the left cheek!

Speaking of renovation injuries, my husband was finishing up the painting in our kitchen this past Friday. He was replacing the light fixture and when he stepped down from the chair and reached back around (not turning his feet) and grabbed the chair to place it back at the table, he pulled some muscles in his back, ouch! His father came by with a tube of Voltaren Emugel and I used it on his back all weekend and it really helped him.
Maybe give it a try a try Kimby, it may help with the inflamation of the bruise.
Cheers, Mich

We're really pleased with how the cabinets turned out: It's "quarter-sawn" oak. The floor is NOT wood, however. It's a strip-vinyl made to look like oak. For a lake cottage we wanted something really durable.
