lovely, rikita. was it SHOT in black & white, or edited that way after the fact? edited afterwards - I don't know if it is even possible to shoot pictures with a digital camera in black and white right away? I thought they are all taken in colour and then you can turn them black and white afterwards? On some cameras, you can take photos in color, black and white or sepia. You can also use software to remove the color after the fact. I'm thinking we should have another thread to explore B/W photography...

I had a second cousin who spent his career as a metalworker, and he had a great love of wrought iron. He actually knew how to do all of this stuff.

My grandfather worked in a wrought iron shop in Chicago when my Mom was little. He did the wrought iron railing around our concrete deck, which served as an ice-skating rink in the winter.

Thanks, ladies. I was totally charmed by the crude but effective carpenter gothic of the windows. Now, what's interesting about those two pictures is that they're part of the same structure ~~

Aha! All is revealed Besides the lovely iron-work I was interested to see the building has a 'tile' cladding of sorts...makes me think about all those Haussmann buildings in Paris that look as if they are built from solid stone!

Tod, that is built of solid stone. The greenish stone you can see in the far right of #100 and in the broken sections of all three of the pictures of the building is the local quarry stone. Oaxaca was originally called "Antequera" by the Spaniards & the green color of many of the buildings gave this city the enduring nickname of La Verde Antequera. Check out the exterior photos in the cathedral thread and you'll see how well deserving it is of that name. I, of course, in my little ruby slippered mind, think of it as The Emerald City.

That substantial grate over the electric meters could use an ornate metal padlock instead of that twist of wire to hold it shut, don't you think? Nice photos. Oaxaca has a wealth of metal work to portray.

Better than a twist of wire, but not very ornamental ~~

Oh, those ladies pretty much count as caryatids, even though they support a balcony rather than columns!

Cool, lots of examples of wrought iron in one pics. A pretty gate, nice little balconies, and a big eyesore in the background.

As you all know, we have all mixed quite a bit of forged iron with the wrought iron, but who cares?
