I've just found, what could be, the perfect piece of land.
I've been looking to purchase some land to, eventually, built a cabin on. This one looks promising. It's 50+ acres, has many mature trees and a large stream runs through it. 500 feet of road frontage and, best of all, is only a couple of minutes walk away from a lake and beach. And only about a 30 or 40 mins drive from where I am now.
I think this may be the place I've been looking for...
I have no idea how to start on building a cabin though. But the guys in my family will be able to help out with that...

Oooh...I like this design. A little unusual but.. I like the fact that it's higher up and probably very light and airy inside with all those windows.

And yes, once it's all completed, I'm having a BIG cabin warm up party and everyone is invited. Bring your beach gear and a boat if you have one

Stay with the simple design.

Maybe a treehouse. In Khao Sok national park in Thailand (actually just outside it) we stayed in a treehouse in Our Jungle House. It was indeed in the jungle, facing a karst cliff just across a small river. Magical.

That's fine until the snow starts falling.

She'll have a ladder to get up. She'll organise food drops. She'll burn the balcony in the wood burner if it gets too cold.

Stay with the simple design. I've got my heart set on the last one, or something similar anyway.. Baz, a tree house sounds like great fun, but I think it'll be simpler to just build a cabin on the ground Maybe have a small tree house just for fun anyway.

imec, you have an interesting definition of "cabin." I like the treehouse idea. Look at this one, Deyana. Cute and cozy (without being claustrophobic.)

Love the 'cabins', imec. Those would take a LONG time to build. The last one would suit me just fine Cristina, do you mean one like this?: Looks nice, but I think I still prefer it on the ground.

This one is amazing, need to put a lot of effort and time into something like this though.

I REALLY like this one: It has the all important fireplace. Good for those snowy winter breaks.

I shouldn't post and run... Try this. It's a slide show of a treehouse cabin (complete with fireplace).

I'm only interested in a cabin if there is a métro station within 5 minutes' walk...

I am with Lagatta on that one. Mr. T63 and I used to go camping but my idea of camping now is a nice Marriott.

I love the first one of your cabin Deyana.
But I'd have to go for a treehouse like Cristina. Some of those are amazing! I have always dreamt of one.
My friend is a carpenter and built his son one for his birthday in a huge tree in their garden. It is magic, it has several levels and ropes/rope ladders/ poles to get up and down. So lucky!

cristina, I've just had a look at your link. VERY nice. It's given me something to think about. Tilly, what I like about the first one is that it would let in all the sun, I'd need to add a fireplace to whichever one I choose, what's a cabin without a fireplace? Kerouac, um..not exactly what I'm looking for.. Lagatta, no need for a subway, I can always drive you there and back.

Yes, it would let all the sun in and you would also see all the beauty around you and feel part of your surroundings.
Oh it would be great looking out through those huge windows at the bad weather when its cold but being all warm and cosy with a fire crackling away.

deyana, there are few things I hate more when on holiday than being dependent on someone to drive me anywhere. And I'm a diehard urbanite - holidays for me mean other cities, or at least towns with some cultural interest. Yes, some of these cabins - however defined - are very beautiful indeed. I was just making a joke

Some more designs that have caught my eye: I like the front porch and chimney in this one: The interior could look something like this: or this:

Dilemma: Should I buy 50 to 100 acres which are nicely wooded, near a lake but doesn't have beach frontage. Or, a much smaller acreage BUT with beach frontage? Also the beach frontage property is further away. By about an hours drive. Both are the same price. What would you choose?

I would choose the beach frontage. How much land is available near the beach? An hour's drive is not much.
I love the idea of a log cabin. I like the one letting in the sun but I also like your favourite with the stoop (?) out front.
Are you thinking beach? or more acres?
