'Sunshine boosts your immune system' researchers claim. Or some of them.

oh but that sounds like something i wouldn't find completely surprising, does it? i mean, sunshine is good for all kinds of stuff.

Except melanoma. That's what my biological father died of, as well as half of Australia.

I too had a melanoma. Because it didn't look like one nobody paid any attention to it, not even a specialist I consulted for another skin problem. After five months my doctor said it wasn't disappearing so should be removed for analysis. She was pale faced when we went to her to hear the result. Its depth ha increased to a fraction of a millimetre being terminal. The French medical service leapt into action and redeemed its previous hiccups. I was operated on within 48 hours - otherwise I might not have had the pleasure of eating dinner with Kerouac.

Frying meat on gas releases more cancer-inducing thingies than frying on gas. It probably doesn't matter which of these is right, as it's probably something that takes so long to build up, no one lives that long anyway. Now, I would say that emitting too much personal gas while using a gas stove could be hazardous to ones health. Weevils in flour prevent the formation of cancerous tumors and reduce the risk of Alzheimer's. ;D This reminds me of something someone around here told me. When he was a kid and they were all riding in the car and the kids would complain of skunk smell, his grandmother would urge them to take deep breaths, claiming that the smell was good for the lungs.

I read today that researchers in America have discovered that women over 39 who drink red wine put on less weight than women who are total abstainers. They also confidently said that the same did not hold true for men - although no men were included in their sample. So the quality of their research is somewhat dibious.

So the total abstainers are drinking Coke instead? And what about beer drinkers -- are they fatter or thinner than wine-drinkers?

Red wine came out best. Total abstaining from alcohol came out worst. The other drinks came out in between.

did they make sure everything else is the same, though? because people from specific backgrounds tend to drink wine more often, and those same people from the same background maybe eat more healthily or do more sports. my host family drank no alcohol, but they ate quite a bit of fast food and always took the car everywhere, for example... anyway, just to make sure i will drink wine to lose weight though.

Well, I don't know about weight, but hasn't it already been clearly established something in red wine is really good for you that is not in other wines and alcohols? Seems like they sell the stuff and there was a big deal made of it on a show called Sixty Minutes, probably back before every back alley internet spammer was trying to sell this stuff. My thought just being the weight thing might not be that off if it is simply that chemical as they said it turns back the clock on cell action, but it would only be a temporary thing that women would do better I guess if that's the case.
Anyway, didn't we just go round this whole carousel with milk / calcium? I thought it was ultimately determined to be false that women who drank milk and ate dairy stayed thinner / lost weight?

Oh-oh, "research"has shown that people who quit smoking have a 70% greater chance of getting diabetes than people who carry on puffing. I'm late to this thread, but the reason smokers don't get diabetes is that they die from lung cancer before it can develop!

Having a nanny for your baby boy may lead to him being a serious womaniser, according to Dr Friedman. This is because it imprints on him the idea that another woman could look satisfy his basic needs.
Dr Friedman does not explain how it affects girl babies.

Researchers in America say that eating 5 portions of fruit and veg a day has a marginal effect in preventing cancer.
An ad at the side of this report said there were 4 simple exercises to rejuvenate an aging brain. I ask myself: do I want the brain of a teenager?

Latest study about chocolate claims that tiny pieces are all that's needed for beneficial effect, and that eating more than a tiny bit decreases your health by adding too much fat and sugar to your diet.
You can eat only half of a truffle, supposedly. Like that is gonna happen.

K2 you made me laugh but only because I was remembering my grandmother. One of her favorite foods is broccoli. She had been taking a medication for some time and was having an awful time with trying to get the dosage adjusted. Well, come to find out, it was not advisable to have broccoli with this medication. Oops. The doctor wanted her to cut out the broccoli but she informed him he would just have to find a broccoli-friendly option. He gave her something different and she was all great from then on.

Apparently coffee is good for the heart, I read. So if I drink lots of cheap red wine with my meal and finish with a strong coffee and a chocolate I should be on top form. And if I wake up with a headache then aspirin will soothe that while it makes heart attacks and strokes less likely.

I read in the Sunday paper that if you reduce your salt intake by 3g a day, it has the same cardiovascular benefits as giving up smoking.
If you don't smoke to begin with, does that make you close to immortal?
