All of us hate it when stars that we appreciate die young, whatever the reason. Nevertheless, there are moments when I have to admit, when time has passed, that I am almost relieved that I did not see them age and change.
For example, I was just watching a Nirvana concert on television, a really remarkable musical moment from 1992. Kurt Cobain was fantastic, but I couldn't help thinking that I would probably not want to see a calmer more mature Kurt Cobain, age 42, in 2009 (or else a ravaged, declining former star in and out of detox).
I think we need some of our idols (?) to never age, even though we are helpless regarding our own aging.
Jim Morrison Jimi Hendrix Janis Joplin etc.
I must admit that it was a relief for me to not have to see Michael Jackson at age 70 (assuming that I would have still been alive to see it).
And of course now I find it strange to have thought that Elvis Presley was quite old enough to die because he was "old" -- age 42 old? What was I thinking? Yet I would not want to see him singing in 2010...
Still, I wonder about all of the strange evolutions that we missed. For example...

I guess we would hope that these stars that died young(ish), would have aged gracefully. But I doubt it in some cases, just look at the Rolling Stones. You have to admire them in a way.... what is age anyway, but a number?

I don't think this is something that one can generalize about. There are many artist/performers who are certainly beyond their prime and many who IMHO should just "hang it up". Then there are others who have aged gracefully with their craft and have continued to crank out great f'n music. Someone who certainly comes to mind for me is Neil Young. saw him perform this past spring and can safely say he still had it. Albeit his voice is older, gravelier, but his musicianship and craft have evolved so beautifully with time. There are others like Paul Simon and many others who fall into this category,at least for me.
