It occurred to me that we have no thread for pictures of ships and boats! What kind of a Port are we? I went to one of the main wharfs here in the Port of New Orleans today, but alas, due to security reasons was unable to get in like I used to be able to...I tried to coerce the guard into letting me in but he could not be swayed by my charms, even when I said I was from Any Port in a Storm! (We need badges BTW ). There were about 30 ships in dock loading up,unloading but no... So, I went back to the river this evening on my bicycle to take some sunset pics and was able to get one ship...(I really wish I had a really good camera! ). Anyway, here is the first of what I hope to be many, many more pictures of ships and boats here in our Port! As you were... She was empty as you can tell from the water line being so high, traveling upriver from who knows where, maybe stopped to see Ms. Lola in Saint Louis. And she was really moving fast, with the current.I had to shoot really fast,as she came out of nowhere.

So you're standing on the north shore of the Mississippi? It seems to get dark quickly too. I'll see what I can dig up, definitely no big ocean liners. The Mekong is an 'open' river I just don't see the Vietnamese letting anything big come up to Phnom Penh on it

I never thought I'd say this, but .......... I feel nostalgia for the water!
Great pictures, you guys. Fumobici, I have a special affection for tugs, and the water in the near section of your photo almost looks as though it's moving.
Casimira, you captured some beautiful skies along with wonderful boat pictures. I love the first one, especially. Super dooper thread.

The Mekong is an 'open' river I just don't see the Vietnamese letting anything big come up to Phnom Penh on it I was on the East bank of the Mississippi HW. The sun had just about gone down and it was fairly cloudy as you can see.I had been trying to get a shot for days and deliberated about even posting but... Won't be seeing too many ocean liners unless I go downtown to the docks where the big cruise ships are. Mostly cargo ships up on the river near here. And lots of tugs and push boats too.My best bet is to go on one of the ferries when time allows.

That boat was on the beach in Santa Marta, Colombia. I thought it was interesting because it looks as though it was just one hollowed-out piece of wood.

They are what they call dug out canoes and are very much a part of the daily fishing life in Tahiti. Gauguin wrote about and of course ,captured beautifully in his paintings from the period he lived there.

Wonderful boat in Bjd's picture, but it's not a canoe nor a dugout. It's more of a dory. What is exceptionally clever and charming in that boat are the cross-pieces, several of which seem to be fashioned from tree limbs. I wonder if they steam-bent them to get them into the right shape.

Good call Bixa! T. would shame me to no end if he knew I was calling that a dug out canoe.(he has attempted on several occasions to make a cross between a dug out canoe and a pirogue ,with not great success). That, plus, being a Yankee,I would never live it down.

Oh to be in Lamu now - before it is ruined by the new port development. I took this picture in Goa. Boats anchored in an inlet just north of Baga.

So many great pictures, and all so different, although it's lovely to see that both the boat in Goa bears a girl's name, as well as the ones in England. Bjd, your beautiful blue picture has a noitcelfer as well!
Any idea on the story behind the wreckage in your Lamu picture, Mark?
Those fishing boats in Ireland are so beautifully maintained, posing proudly against that magnificent sky.
