I can't wait to take a cargo ship as a passenger. I dive into each and every article about life on board for useless (but paying) people. I always think of all of the books that I could finally read and the things that I could write. Make sure they have Wifi so you can keep up ramp up your Any Port duties!

Well here you go Kerouac! A friend of ours has done this trip three times now and says its is incredible! A small cargo ship, limited number of passengers, time spent investigating Napoleon's home and a memorabilia, and then picked up in a week or so and back to South Africa where you can continue on to Kruger National Park? ?? rms-st-helena.com/

Tod what a terrific link! I have never thought the typical cruise would interest me, however, this one definitely would. I laughed when I viewed the menu and noticed that included in the dessert selections was spotted dick!
Kerouac, is this ship not (I am not sure if this is the correct word) rugged enough for what you envision when thinking of a cargo ship? For me, it is a great compromise.
Gosh, the members on here can find just about anything we think of. Amazes me sometimes, like now.
Cheers! Mich

I've had my eye on the St. Helena for some time although I realize that it is a mixed use ship.

Why is there no correct spelling, Mark? Is it because it's an Arabic word, and Arabic has no direct letter-for-letter translation to English?

There are some parallels in the spellings but too many variations from Arabic to our alphabet to make many things consistent. Street names are the biggest bug-bear in that no two maps seem to agree. A felluca in Arabic is - فلوكة Translate that and you'll get feluca, felluca, felucca, fellucca etc. To me all are correct if the pronunciation is right.
They were taken in Aswan but there are these boats all up and down the Nile. One little known fact is - An often untold story is the large fleet of lateen-rigged feluccas that thronged San Francisco's docks before the construction of the state-owned Fisherman's Wharf in 1884.

Certainly. It's called a lateen sail and to me is the most beautiful of sails.

The first one in #127; the "forest of masts" (#8 in 138); and #140 all really capture the spirit of why Image Bank is here.
Wonderful photos, you all!

casi, will "France" suffice, or should I get out my trip journal and find out exactly where? (Only possible because of the digital date stamp associated with my photos. My memory is NO HELP these days!)
