Again, I do believe that 'miles logged' and 'late starts' are not that important. We each travel when we are ready, when that inner sense says, time to go. Very true, Jazz. To be honest, the thought of travel hardly ever crossed my mind while my kids where younger. I was concentrating more on enjoying being with them and the whole experience of being a parent. Which in itself is irreplaceable. It's only recently that I've become interested in exploring the world again. And I'm looking forward it.

Did you know the famine was 'on' or did you and the rest of the world discover that after your return? ;D Yes, I knew the famine was on, but I also knew that it was not in Addis Ababa. Ethiopia is quite a huge country after all. However, I did see that extreme poverty was rampant in Addis, and I remember going to a small supermarket with my mother which had lots of empty shelves and a grand total of three products on sale: locally made really ugly potato chips, Bulgarian canned sardines, and American tick and flea collars for pets. Since I couldn't imagine Ethiopians worrying about ticks and fleas on any pets they might have, I imagined that if they ever bought these items, they put them on their children.

The thing it changes about me is, the more I travel the more I want to. It makes me greedy to experience more and more of this world and it's people.

Tilly - I feel like that too.....I settled down and stayed home for the 20 odd years it took to bring up my children (however we had 2 or 3 holidays a year) ....now I can take off when I wish (more or less).....

Yes, holidays are my travelling for now and will be for some time I suppose. I can wait 20 years or so if I will have the adventures you have waiting for me...supposing there is any planet left by then In the meantime I am looking forward to infecting the girl with the travel bug and showing her the world ;D

i don't know how to define well traveled, so i don't know if i am. some people in my family seem to think i traveled too much, and i have been at several places, though by far not at all of the ones i want to see...
i think traveling (especially if you take a wider definition of traveling, and count for example high school and university exchange programs along with it) has made me more self confident, and it has taught me to take less things for granted - like, things are different elsewhere, which means that life works even if it isn't like it is here. and at the same time it has taught me to appreciate some things about my own country - but of course also has taught me what i like better elsewhere...

Funny you should say that, Riky. My mother can't understand why I like to travel. She wonders why people want to inconvenience themselves by going from place to place.

my mom used to not like traveling too much, or at least she always said she likes it best at home... but i took her traveling a few times (i.e., she visited me when i lived in romania and in peru, and we traveled around together for three weeks, and we went to spain together for two weeks), and she liked that and now is eagerly talking about where we should go next...
