Here are 3 specimens of 2-3 star Chinese hotels' signs. you may have to enlarge them to read but I'll tell you the good bits... "point profess your excellency" = you are here. Paragraphs 2, 3 and 4 limit me somewhat, but the first par on right hand page makes up for it Paras 5, 7, 9, 10, 12 and 14 make me wonder if I am virtuous enough to stay there.

I've had jobs that made me feel like an "illegal drudge". ;D
Clever you to think of getting pictures of these jewels. The last one was an actual book of instructions for guests?!

One of the rules in a hotel in Hanoi was that I could not use the room as a liaison office.

Having secret liaisons in a hotel in Hanoi sounds a bit Le Carre to me. Go for it, I say!

This must be one of the few last "Ancient Lights" signs in London. Once upon a time you could see them all over the place, relics of the days before our modern planning application system, when this was thought to be the only effective way of warning any neighbouring property owner against trying to build something that would block out existing natural light:

Patrick - The brickwork and style of building is identical to what we stayed in last year in the Euston area. That could easily be our bathroom window of the apartment we rented except I remember it looking down on a flat roof in the back yard of the building. I would love to know where you took the photo!

It's in Rupert Court, a pedestrian passageway between two streets in Soho (a perfectly respectable one, he hurriedly added). The building style is universal for ordinary domestic construction of the nineteenth century all across English cities.

I always wonder how, despite the grammar being completely off, the spelling is usually correct.

Speaking of donations (and this is totally off topic), when I visited the Alamo I was amazed that it apparently receives no official funding and is maintained exclusively by donations (unless they were lying).

Hmm. The only time I went to San Antonio was during the first Clinton administration. It happened to be during that federal government shut-down, which meant that the Alamo was closed. Wouldn't that mean that it's federally funded?
Your comment on that sign is apt, Htmb! Do they have gravesites going empty?

The cemetery was completely full, which I suppose is the reason they stopped using it for burial in 1884. However, I did see, on the back side of one of the graves, a place where something, or someone, had been digging. That was my sign it was time to leave.
