Throat singing is an art form unique to the Inuit of northern Canada (although similar styles of singing are practiced in Tibet, Mongolia, Siberia and formerly in Hokkaidō where the last singer died in 1976). Here is a example of it's traditional form followed by an example of an updated style by a young singer who performed here last night with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra.

Really fascinating. I was most intrigued by the first tape, as it's always interesting to be exposed to something that is totally outside my experience of music. A question about the first video: on several selections, it sounds as though there is recorded voice/music joining them. Is that so, or are the two girls making all the sounds?
A coincidence -- last night I saw an episode of The Big Bang Theory with Sheldon doing Tuvan throat singing.

As odd as it may seem, all of those sounds (yes, even those electronic sounding ones) are emerging from their mouths. It's one of the most fascination, mysterious, mesmerizing sounds I've ever encountered.
