Great expression. I would take it to mean "less than the appearance promised" or "all glitter, no gold".
Two things that meant a lot today ~ the first and best was receiving >>presents<< in the mail from a dear, sweet friend.
The other was having the nice Dutch yoga teacher deliver the nice Dutch cheese to my house, including a more mature one this time.

A neighborhood chap and friend returned a pie pan back to me this a.m.
In it was a pie!!!
I had "owed" him a pie for having sharpened a few of my garden tools. He would not charge me for it but off handedly said, "bake me a pie sometime".
I finally came through and baked him a pie a week or so ago and he called me this morning and said he wanted to return my pie pan.
When I expressed my utter pleasure and delight and told him that it wasn't necessary for him to do that he said he never returns an empty dish to someone who has made something for him.

Can you sharpen my mower?
Mrs Cactus is a great pie chef. She has cold hands. What would you like?

Mick, I think you may have misread my post. I didn't sharpen the tools. He sharpened mine and I baked him a pie in return. I wouldn't know the first thing about sharpening a mower. I sharpen my secauters but the long bladed clippers and loppers are difficult for me to get the right angle to do properly. I do bake a good pie though.

I sharpen any bladed tool myself. Then I throw them away and buy a new one 'cause I did a crap job. Drill bits are impossible as well. On the other hand, I've never thrown a pie away I've made. I did a good job once though on a machete in the Congo. It might even have been the same day I made pie. I was cooking on gas that day. Actually it was a wood fire, but I'm not quibbling.
I love pies. Casi, I'm coming over to taste one of yours. I'll be there in an hour or so. Will that give you enough time or shall I postpone?

OH!OH!!! Can we postpone until this evening? I have an eye doctor appointment for this pesky eye problem that's been plaguing me for a couple of weeks. If I were to cancel, there would be no guarantee as to what would end up in the pie. (apples and/or potatoes, it could happen..) So, so good to see you on here posting!!! Please, if time allows, fill us in on your latest adventures. Very good to see you!!!!

Who is going to sharpen my mower now?

I did indeed misread it. Who is going to sharpen my mower now? Can you still get that clip-on thing with the abrasive strip? I did that decades ago with my parents' ancient lawnmower that probably hadn't been sharpened since before the war, and it worked a treat. Won’t work Patrick. It’s a rotary mower.
We used to get guys come to the door to sharpen anything but haven’t seen them for years.

My daughter wrote a letter to her godfather wishing him a happy new year. I told her she was a little bit early but said 'send it nevertheless, I love my godfather and don't see him often enough, he'll be happy to get it'. So her letter is in the mail. This past week marked the passage of Yom Kippur. I don't know if it's applicable or not but, it is indeed the thought that counts.

Rosh Hashana, a much friendlier holiday, is the Jewish New Year. Yom Kippur is often translated as the Day of Atonement - total fast, no water either.

No wine either. And don't try drinking wine, even moderately, for 24h, with no water. You'd be dying of thirst.

I've made some teeny tiny beef in red wine gravy pies for my sister...she has a tiny appetite at the best of times and post-op she might have problems making meals. I made them in bun tins with really thin pastry...each pie only has about 3 pieces of steak in a lovely rich sauce. She's thrilled as you can imagine....

I'm quite sure she is. I am currently reading a book by a minor pop star in France who nearly died of a horrible blood disease at age 40. One of the main points that he made was how few people you can count on when you are in the shit. Most friends and a lot of family just write you off and are frankly offended if you do not die quickly. Survivors are basically accused of not following the game plan and causing unnecessary worry and distress.
So the faithful who never abandon you are appreciated more than you can imagine.

Sounds about right. My other sister (also being treated for cancer) and I have booked the three of us into Ragdale Hall Spa in February for two days of pampering. They've both got to be well by then cos we've already paid for it.

Quote from Final Season of Downton Abbey:
“In the end, you’re my sister,” Edith says with a shrug. “And one day, only we will remember Sybil. Or Mama or Papa. Or Matthew or Michael. Or Granny or Carson. Or any of the others who have peopled our youth. Until at last our shared memories will mean more than our mutual dislike.”

It’s not often that one receives positive feedback on Facebook (this one, anyway), so these words meant a lot:
“K_____, you, dear woman, are a role model for our times: calm and generous and curious and responsible. You did the research as these posts berating and sometimes misinforming and sometimes SHOUTING😉 and sometimes baiting you piled up. You accepted responsibility where you were misinformed, and corrected yourself. All in all, stellar social media skills. Brava👏👏👏👏👏 (you Socialist Communist Hippie, you 😉😉)!

The post was on a group page where people posted photos and videos taken by their trail cams (aka game cameras). What on earth in that sort of content could have inspired such a heated debate, I wonder? But on the internet, anything's grist to the mill for the argumentative. I mentioned that I came across a game camera while strolling through the woods in Wisconsin (on a parcel posted For Sale, but no No Trespassing signs) and held up the beer cans I’d picked up so the camera owner “would know I was a good trespasser not a bad trespasser.” When I grew up, Wisconsin law required property owners to put up signs if they didn’t want people to cross their property. Since I left WI, however, the law was changed and now all property is considered closed to access unless you have the owner’s permission. This was a rural tract with no “improvements”. The people on the thread were decidedly against casual strolling on private property. They have no qualms, however, about installing their game cams on public lands, filming game animals in advance of hunting season, but also filming unsuspecting recreationists without our knowledge and without our permisssion. Another contentious discussion ensued on this topic. The page is called TrailCam Therapy, if you are on FaceBook and want to see some gorgeous candid photos and videos of wild animals.

Ever since they changed the name from "video surveillance" to "video protection," we are supposed to be overjoyed every time we are on camera.
