It is quite normal here that the staples, like a 1kg bag of local rice, is cheaper when you buy two of them than a 2kg bag. Oil is the same per litre. It's not until you get to really bulk items, like a 20kg sack of rice that the ratio comes down again.

I find that the most common items with fake bargains are in detergents, cleaning products and canned pet foods. They are packaged in containers that are not whole numbers to begin with...365 grams or 445 litres so unless you have a calculator it is all too hard and you take it on trust that the savings are real. They also use comparisons like "7 for the price of 5", knowing that many people are rather weak on 7 times tables. Knowing that the item is not perishable and it is always handy to have in storage, we opt for the apparent bargain.
Washing Powder...755g per packet...bargain...buy 3 packs for only $2.29

at least in supermarkets here, i think they are required to always put the price per kg or something like that in small print underneath the price of the package. and here, too, the bigger package is not always a bargain ...

Unit pricing is the norm here, but the units aren’t always consistent, even for the same product of the same brand. One size package is marked .28 per ounce and the other might be $3.25 per each. Without a calculator, you don’t know which is a deal.
Also, there’s a big difference between “2 for $5” and Buy one, get one free”. You can buy one of the 2/$5 for$2.50. But if you only want one of the “buy1/get 1” you pay the same price as if you buy 2.
Mr. Kimby falls for that all the time, bringing home two identical boxes of breakfast cereal. He also doesn’t realize that you can mix and match flavors/varieties with these deals.

And of course there is that outrageous trick of hiding price hikes by changing the package size -- something that remains the same price, but the package discreetly switches from 400g to 370g one day. One thing they couldn't hide was the day that the pocket-sized packages of tissues changed from 10 to 9. For me that's the same as if they suddenly started selling cartons of eleven eggs.

Sugar did that at one time. The piece of sugar increased in size. The price didn't change, and the size of the box neither. So everything was the same. Except that for the guy who had his coffee with one piece of sugar, he had to buy boxes more often. And check his diabetis too. Smart.

54,000km/h may seem a lot. So is 61,000km/h. But it is little in comparison to the speed of light. "High" speeds can be formatted in such as way as to relate to the speed of light in a vacuum - referred to as c. Thus half the speed of light would be 0.5c The fastest man made object so far is Helios 2 which orbited the sun in 1976, which at one point reached 410,000km/h. The new probe launched in August this year, is projected to read a touch less than 700,000km/h.
Today the second Voyager probe exited the solar system. Voyagers 1 and 2 were launched in 1977 but number 2 was a bit faster, so number 1 has just left the building, you might say. The little thing is that, in relation to light speed, they are still only doing about 0.000055c

was being cranky with a. (because i was feeling generally cranky, and that makes it difficult when she wants to have everything she sees) while shopping today, so the lady at the cash register gave us two chocolates "one for the child, and one to give mommy strength" ...

How "sweet".
My next door neighbor gave me three(!!!!) gift subscriptions. All 3 fabulous magazines. The New York Review of Books, The New Yorker and LIVINGBIRD (a fabulous publication published by the Cornell University Ornithology Laboratory).

It means a lot to me that the secular celebration of Christmas is not yet dead in France with (almost) all of the halal butcher shops and greengrocers decorated just like the other businesses and mobbed today by their usual customers who want a special Christmas dinner just like everybody else. (However, I noticed one halal butcher shop with no festive decorations -- and no customers either.)

Light has returned to my apartment after three months of darkness -- the scaffolding is finally coming down. It has been like living through a non stop 40% eclipse all this time.

Wonderful news, Kerouac! Do you think a quarter-year's worth of gloom was affecting your mood? I don't know how you stood it.

The scaffolding is gone on two sides of the building but it won't be taken off the back side until tomorrow. Unfortunately, that is the only side where it was obligatory to close the shutters the whole time due to the placement of the supporting structure. Relief will be total when I can open those shutters again.

Two lovely things, bixa! Was it Belgian chocolate?
It's NOT raining here! Nor snow, nor sleet, or hail! Sunny, and fairly mild. It will probably rain again tomorrow, though.

Was it Belgian chocolate? Who knows at this juncture? The name stamped on the segments is Cote d'Or. I suppose I bought it in Amsterdam.

It's a Belgian brand. The name is in honour of Ghana, which was called the Gold Coast as a British colony.

My little thing. I attended the monthly program of the group of art appreciators I have belonged to since 1985, and was surprised and honored to receive a plaque from the local cultural council naming me an “Art Star” for my work over the years supporting art education. I was floored. As I listened to his speech, I assumed our whole group was being singled out for recognition, not just little old me.
It’s wonderful to feel appreciated!
