I inherited an iPhone from my son when he got a new one. I am on a pay as you go plan and have kept my home phone with 4 cordless handsets. I don't like phoning just to chat with people. The result is... last month my home phone made 11 local calls and 1 to Indonesia. My mobile phone bill gets paid quarterly now because it is always under $10 Maybe if I were more capable with the mobile I'd use it more often, and if I used it more often, I'd become more capable.

I bought a smartphone (I assume that's what you mean by a "cell", Bixa?) 4 years ago. I thought I should learn to use one before my brain turns to mush with age. Well, everyone around here says "cel" or "movil", plus I don't want to call it a smartphone yet, as it will be a dumb phone until I can use it with assurance. And it's not just my exceptionally nimble brain wanting to keep up with current technology, but the feeling that we're all going to have to have them soon, whether we want to or not. I do want it for all the phone-specific and the mini-computer reasons now available: putting tickets & boarding passes on the phone, instant communication when necessary, etc. It will take me a while to get over nervousness about doing financial transactions with it, but eventually I want to use it with the same assurance as Patrick uses his. recent Huawei which needs to be charged almost every day Don't tell me that -- Huawei is the kind I have! It is amazing how they take over peoples lives, to the exclusion of real social contact. Amen to that, Mossie! Really, it has been one of the biggest deterrents to my acquiring one, as I sneer at and even feel hostility toward all the people who have given up the use of one hand because they must have the phone in it at all times. And when someone glances away from me to check the phone, that's it for me. Kimby, my story is not as dramatic, but the first time I used a cell phone was because I ran out of change for a pay phone and a passer-by offered me his mobile phone. He had to input the number for me. n traveling it becomes a critical data link to the internet as well Travel was the big impetus for me, as on this trip I'll be moving from place to place & have to coordinate with landlords. I might need to wattsap with some Anyporters, too! I do not think I will ever get used to using the call waiting feature. I HATE that & had it removed from my landline package. Will have to figure out some way to over-ride it on the new phone. (& congratulations on your discipline in the weight-loss journey!) Maybe if I were more capable with the mobile I'd use it more often, and if I used it more often, I'd become more capable. Thanks, Questa. I am taking that to heart & will keep it in mind so I won't be lazy about learning the new device.

That's why I had to take it off my landline. First of all, I would never interrupt one call for another, plus the call waiting function from my phone service actually breaks into the call.

I might need to wattsap with some Anyporters, too! Whatsapp is one of the very rare features that I use regularly.

Yes, WhatsApp is handy and a money-saver. We have a family group for swapping photos and assorted family news. And my niece's husband uses Skype or something similar for video calls with his family in South Africa. I don't have much call for it myself, but it could up the holiday bragging stakes - "Just calling to show you the fabulous view from our hotel room - oh dear, have I interrupted your ironing/washing up/cleaning out the cat's litter tray?" I use WhatsApp as well. I enjoyed being in contact with the messages and photos you can use when our friends were in Costa Rica.

I've used Skype a good bit for phoning, but almost always with the video turned off. I can't remember what I paid this past summer for global Skype, but I think it was @10 usd for a month's usage.

Frankly, I just use Whatsapp for messaging or for sending a photo or two. But most of the people I know use it for video calls. I will, too, sooner or later.

I hate video calls. Esp since I often call whilst in the loo (on ?) or in my bath. The day they find a way to carry odours i will never pick up phone anymore.

To be fair....the number one reason that we don't have an all singing, all dancing mobile phone is that I would become it's slave. As it is I'm on my kindle, tablet or laptop far too often for my beloved's liking....

We use skype for keeping in touch visually with our son and grandchildren in Canada. At least we see them grow and change, unlike my poor mother who had to be content with letters, photographs and an occasional visit.
Also for talking with others when we want to see them rather than just talking on the phone.
No Whatsapp since I can send text messages with photos with my phone. And I think Facebook has enough customers without me.

When the repairman came first thing this morning to check the hot water tank, and thankfully, only a repair and not a replacement and hot water within the hour!

Kimby, I think Bixa's feet would be dry as it sounds like she is walking on air (believe it or not)

So happy to hear you are enjoying your adventure in Venice Bixa! It is an amazing place. For myself, St. Mark's was too chaotic, but for normal people it is probably fabulous. Anxious to hear and see what you found there.

From the Daily Skimm:
“Who you wish spoke at your graduation… Robert F Smith. Yesterday, the billionaire told Morehouse College's graduating class he would pay off their student debt...costing him an estimated $40 million. He encouraged the students to pay it forward so future classes can have "all the opportunities of the American dream."
Wow.

A fine gesture but not so good for the graduating students in the real world. Would it not have been better for Mr Smith to offer jobs in his organisation and use his influence to encourage other business leaders in different fields to join him in this generous act. I know that paying back student loans can be crippling but learning how to work and achieve success and overcome setbacks may be a better gift.
"Give a man a fish and he eats for a day, teach him how to fish and he eats for a lifetime. Teach him how to use a computer and he is soon controlling the International Fish Marketing Organisation, which he created.

Hard to say. This allows 400 black men to leave college debt-free. Perhaps it’s a social experiment to test whether they take advantage of or squander this opportunity.

If he were sincere, I assume he'd be putting a similar effort into supporting Bernie Sanders and his plan for tuition-free tertiary education in the US. I'm assuming he isn't sincere and does't because billionaires are almost by definition evil.

I'm wondering if the students who did not manage to graduate on schedule will be left with all of their debts.
I would have never thought that Harvard was the same price as Morehouse... and it isn't, because that Harvard amount does not include room & board, which is an extra $20,230.

Ha, Questa ~ and yes to walking on air. Well, except for today. I braved the rain earlier, but when I tried again in the afternoon I only lasted about five minutes before deciding it was stupid to be getting that wet. Mich, I guess I got lucky, as I went to St. Mark's late yesterday afternoon. The light was just beautiful and the square was crowded, but not too horribly. Also, I managed to go inside the church for the last half of Mass and oh my word ~ the interior is sublime and it was so lucky to see it with very few people inside. Even though I obviously couldn't move around much and take pictures, I think I was too blown away to even try, honestly. ... billionaires are almost by definition evil. Tsk. There are some well-known cases of heirs to great wealth who give much of it away, and even some self-made billionaires who try to share the wealth. I do agree that the right way to do that is to change the system, which is a long-term and dignified solution compared to even the most benevolent charitable acts.
