A sweet friend dropped by unexpectedly today with a nicely wrapped bag containing this: She said it had made her think of me so she bought it! It has a little hook at the bottom for a set of keys or the like.

Aww, she is a sweet friend. Good taste, too -- that little plaque is adorable.

As well as being beautiful on the inside, she's also drop dead gorgeous;one of those women who gets even better looking the older she gets.
The part about having "well-behaved hair" is dead on, too. My hair is totally out of control.

somehow my balcony looks a lot more ordered and nice this year - maybe because i decided to cut down a bit on how much i plant, because i have less time - and end up being able to concentrate more on the plants i have... makes me happy how it looks...

I got a laugh about well-behaved hair in drizzly Paris! My little thing this morning is just finishing combing the tangles out of my hair, with lots of conditioner. Will jump into the shower to rince it out and clean rest of body (which is not very dirty) as I'm heading to the "Urban cycling summit" here (a slightly pretentious name for a meeting on how to improve conditions and encourage practical everyday cycling for people of all ages and conditions here).
rikita, as for plants, it will be wonderful when your daughter becomes interested in them, even blades of grass, as everything is new to her! (perhaps not a small thing, though, that).

Oh, I suspect we could do a huge thread on hair. The best haircut I even had was after my fourth child when I chopped it all off to about 3 inches. It looked like hell, but it was sure easy to deal with.

yeah, especially visiting my mom will be nice then, when she can crawl around the garden... on the balcony i just have to find an elevated spot for the amaryllis, the helleborus, the oleander and similar plants...

Don't put an oleander anywhere near where an infant might reach, they are quite poisonous!

yeah i know... right no she can't crawl yet, but once she can i have to think of an elevated place for it...

As a child, I was always told to avoid the two oleandar bushes in our front yard as well, but frankly the leaves were not at all appealing, so I don't think there would have been much of a risk in any case.

I gave my ruined memory card to someone I hardly know (Brazilian student), and he managed to save the photos on it in spite of the seawater. You'll see in due time that it would have been a shame to lose some of them.

We went to the discount grocery store today in the Central District in Seattle, which is known for better or for worse as a black neighbourhood. In addition to some amazingly odd groceries (frozen game hens for $1.99 each), I bought a Dinah Washington cd from a veteran sitting at a table full of Motown and R+B hits. We chatted about Veteran's Day and great music. I miss Remembrance Day when I'm down here, because it's always been quite an event in my life, coming from a Canadian military family, and it pretty well passes silently in the US. Anyway, he was so nice, we had a nice talk, and I have great dinner music now. Nice.

What a lovely outcome from what promised to be a mundane grocery store run, Lizzy.
It does seem to me that Veteran's Day used to be a bigger deal in the US when I was much younger.

Armistice Day in France is going to be very much celebrated from November 11, 2013 to November 11, 2018 due to the centennials of so many WW1 events coming up. This year's bigger deal than usual is just because they had to choose a date to start off the commemorations.

Armistice Day means a lot to me. I buy and wear my poppy every year to support our Veterans. I watch the ceremonies on TV and offer my minute of silence at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month to honor those who gave their lives and for those who served in the First World War.
On my Facebook yesterday there was mention of a group of students from a University in Ottawa who were going to wear and distribute white poppies. Veterans are very hurt by this. The students say the red poppy glorifies war. The Veterans say they can not understand how these students missed out on the education every child receives from kindergarten to grade 12 on the significance of Remembrance Day and the Poppy. The students say the white is for purity. The Veterans say the white signifies surrender and how can they not understand this is offensive to them.
If it were not for the sacrifices made in WW1, these students may not have the freedom to be offensive, I wonder if they realize that.

Oh well, each generation will try to push the envelope farther. Since this is to promote "peace" I won't condemn them, but clearly they were a bit insensitive to the sacrifices of previous generations. Perhaps their message would have been accepted better if they had said they were going to wear a white poppy "in addition to" the red poppy.
Since people don't do the poppies outside of the Commonwealth, obviously the rest of the world does not feel as passionate about such matters.

Yes, a few years ago, some women tried to promote white poppies as an protest against the rape that happens in war. At the time, it was deemed far more offensive than the kids and their protests today. It's a bad idea to try to shoehorn your agenda onto someone else's observance. It can only be seen as disrespect, whereas the promotion of peace and condemnation of rape are two honourable and completely valid positions.

I agree, outside the Commonwealth the significance of the Poppy is not understood the same way, but these students have been well educated in the significance in Canada and yes they have the choice to abstain.
I do not condemn them, I just can not understand why they would do something like this, they have been insensitive to these Veterans that just want one day a year to remember the fallen soldiers and their survivors who gave their lives for the freedom of others. Why intrude, because they can?

Why intrude, because they can?
Well, yes. I would think so.
I think another factor is the huge ethnic mix in the student populations at both Ottawa U and Carleton. Many do not at all identify with the "European" conflict and loss of life in WW1. I know that many students are of Chinese, Arab, Iranian, Ethiopian, etc, etc backgrounds. "Flanders Fields" means nothing to them.

When I checked into the rather luxurious hotel tonight (for which I am paying with gift certificates since I am the sort of tightwad who would never pay the real price), I was busy turning down the breakfast for 13€, when the young woman at the reception desk said "You look really old and decrepit I don't know how old you are but breakfast is free if you are over the age of 60." So unfortunately, I will be having a free breakfast tomorrow morning.

So unfortunately, I will be having a free breakfast tomorrow morning. What I want to hear in that type of situation is, "No, there is absolutely no way you are that old! I don't believe it. You're going to have to show me some ID before I can let you have the free breakfast, discount ticket, jump to the front of the line," or whatever.

Remember that to some people in their 20s, anyone over the age of 35 looks impossibly ancient. Still, the hotel could train its children staff to say something on the order of, "We hope you'll enjoy your stay and recommend us. Please tell your older friends that breakfast is free for those over 60." That would be your cue to admit to dinosauriasis, and hers to say "No, there is absolutely no way you are that old! I don't believe it. You're going to have to show me some ID before I can let you have the free breakfast, discount ticket, jump to the front of the line," or whatever.

Oh, when I went to Shoppers Drug Mart a few years back, I was asked by a young thing if I was eligible for the seniors discount. I must have looked like that crap that day! But then again, when I was in Florida recently, I was carded for ordering a Stella. The world is strange.

I was carded in Seattle, but I was told at the time that 100% of customers are carded so that people can't claim discrimination.
