Glad to hear it basically went well and your time there was short. Hopefully, you won't need the painkillers, but it is really nice to have them just in case. I certainly would not hesitate to use them, at least initially. You can always take something milder for inflammation if you need it during the following days.

Having never had a root canal, this was very interesting! Hopefully you will not have any pain once all the freezing has worn off. I have never had the freezing so I do not know what that feels like either.
I was at my Dentist on Monday for my biannual cleaning and examination. This time they did x-rays as well but everything is good, no problems or anything to be concerned about.

Pleased for you that it all went well. I have resisted telling my root canal story till now. However I had to have one of my dog teeth done a few years back. At the first session things initially went well but then the dentist found that his drill was making no progress so called a halt and took an X-ray. This disclosed, I kid you not, a pearl!! in the canal which was too hard for his drill. He was quite excited, never having seen one before, but he was aware that they could occur, although, like me, it was a very rare thing.
So I had to wait some time for the next session as he had to send away for a special drill. When that came things progressed well until he became concerned about how far into my head the drill was going. This meant another pause for an X-ray. As he explained he didn't want to drill into my eye, and certainly nor did I. However everything turned out well and it all finished painlessly, although I could feel the filling through my cheek for some years after.

Mossie, does this mean you're an oyster?

I read recently that when drilling is done into the upper teeth, it is possible to pierce a path into the sinus area and if this happens, you are afflicted with a sewer smell for at least a week until the hole closes naturally. According to what I read, you are at first convinced that the entire world smells like a sewer and then you realize that it is "just you" after questioning everybody around you (who smells nothing).

Mossie, I know this might be silly but I have to ask, what is a dog tooth? I have never heard of a pearl in a tooth before! I will have to ask my Dentist on my next visit in October if he has every encountered one and also about the sewer smell!

my poor brother found out today, that not only does he need another root canal, but he will have to pay 1000 euros towards it, as the health insurance only fully covers the first root canal, not if it has to be redone (or done again or something, not sure how root canals work) because, like in his case, the first dentist didn't do it well ...

Oh that is a bad situation Rikita. I do not think there would be any recourse here either if a Dentist did not do the job correctly. I know our Dentist has made repairs on my sister-in-law at no charge. He is an excellent professional and would not want to risk his reputation but I do not think he has to do so, he could charge again. My husband and I each have Dental plans through our employer's so we are very fortunate to have 100% coverage.
I hope he is not in too much pain while he waits.

My tooth is generally referred to as an canine or eye tooth, next to the pair of tombstones which are the front two teeth.

Isn't there a dental school to which he can go? I pay absolutely nothing for my dental work.

no idea, really ... i will tell him to research this, though i think here even at the training places it doesn't work different than elsewhere financially (like, some things are covered by insurance, others you have to pay).

People have to pay for a few things at the Paris dental school if they don't have complementary insurance, but the rates are less than half the commercial prices. The only drawback here is that often you have to wait for an appointment much longer than in private practice. However, in my recent experience, although the first dentist I saw on an 'emergency' basis due to a toothache said "it might be 3 months," it turned out to be only 3 days.

I went to the dentist today for a regular teeth cleaning. Have I mentioned how much I HATE going to the dentist!!!!!!!!!!!!
At least today I wasn't told I would need another crown, unlike my last two-check up appointments.

I finished my dental series a few weeks ago, and it ended quite well. My students really wanted to do a crown but the professor nixed the idea, because it wasn't necessary. He said to just do a partial reconstruction (whatever that is). Apparently student #1 was really gifted because student #2 kept peering into my mouth while she was working and saying "oh, that is really beautiful, that is so beautiful!" And when the professor came to inspect the finished job, he asked her "is this for a beauty contest?" Naturally I was very curious as to what on earth had happened in my mouth, so I took a look when I got home and all I could see was a perfect tooth where in the past I had a semi-damaged tooth with a visible filling. I have no idea how she managed that. And yay, still free of charge!

ah i think i never said what i think of going to the dentist. not a big fan at all. i always need anaestetic, and even with that i find it hard to keep my mouth open and not wimper all the time. without anaestetic is hurts horribly.
worse dentist appointment for me was the specialists taking out my wisdom teeth. the first one, doing one side, was probably quite good, but i found him quite unfriendly. he kept telling me off for not having my mouth open wide enough. i wasn't doing that on purpose, it is just a natural reaction to kind of close it when scared, and i thought he really could have reminded me in a friendly way, like my dentist usually does.
the second one, doing the other side, was a lot nicer but seems to have messed up the shot with the anaestetic - after he gave that to me, i saw double for five to ten minutes, and later on my cheek was swollen for ages ...

Kerouac -Glad to hear your dental work went so smoothly. My original dentist cannot practise any longer due to the fact he developed a brain tumor. He regularly used to have about 6 students fly in from the eastern block or some such place, and teach them the latest dentistry methods. For this he needed guinea pigs.....er sorry, I mean human targets....no that's not right, meant willing volunteers. It wasn't free but all you paid for was the ingredients used. A person could get a complete set of implants for a fraction of the price.

Even at the dental school in Paris, implants cost a lot -- but they are still half price compared to other places.

On my last full day in Flagstaff I managed to pop a crown off a molar while I was flossing. After debating what to do I decided to visit a local dentist so I wouldn't have to wait over the weekend to have it repaired, and also to make sure the tooth would not cause me any pain while flying.
The dentist was a real interesting man, about my age, who had just returned from a three week trip to England and France. This was his first day back in the office after three weeks vacation. Apparently, he spent some of his time in France with college friends who had flown Air France and were having a difficult time returning to the U.S. The dentist was happy he had flown British Airways, which has direct Phoenix to London Heathrow service, and had spent a couple of days in England on one side or the other of his trip.
Anyway, after an x-ray of the tooth I was delighted to hear there was no decay and I wouldn't need a root canal. The crown is back in place and, hopefully, will stay put for a long time.

I'm having some pretty lousy luck with teeth lately. I woke up at 3:30 this morning with pain from what I believe is an abcessed tooth on the opposite side of my mouth from my "Flagstaff" problem. I'm going to try to get through until Monday with Advil and hot tea, but I'm guessing I'm going to need a root canal. That will mean cutting out the next two hoped for little vacation trips because of the expense.

Ouch. I'm glad that my root canal was free at the dental school, not to mention the supreme luck of having the professor perform it on me to show the students rather than the opposite.

Yes, you were fortunate all the way around. I will have good care, but it will cost a lot. I don't have dental insurance since it was never cost effective. However, we are in the middle of our open enrollment period and I'm seriously considering adding the supplement for the future.

Hopefully the treatment and costs are not as high as you are anticipating htmb! and pain free, of course!
I received information from my employer while away that my plans are being changed (reduced) and that I will now have the option to pay a monthly premium to retain or enhance the current plan. I have a month to consider my options before the enrollment period expires. Being that my husband also has a plan, his plan would pay for what mine does not so we are inclined to not enroll in the new monthly premium at his point.

Thank you, Mich. I suppose my thinking was wishful. The pain and swelling has been increasing so I called my dentist. I have just now taken the first of a horse-pill sized antibiotic guaranteed to also wreak stomach havoc.

Double ouch.
I visited my parents once in Florida with a throbbing tooth, and I tried to hide the problem using a combination of that famous product whose name escapes me, as well as wedging aspirin tablets against the offending area. Clearly I did not succeed because when I left, my father told me, "I don't know why, but we just didn't have as much fun together as we usually have." I never told my parents that I had experienced about 10 days of tooth discomfort during my holiday.
I should have just gone to a dentist while I was there, but my entire family was always allergic to anybody in the medical profession, so I was just continuing the family tradition.

My weekend was fairly pathetic. I had enough pain to make me very really uncomfortable, and my left cheek is grotesquely swollen. Fortunately the antibiotic fully kicked in late last night so I could sleep. I saw my dentist early this morning and I will be having a root canal tomorrow after work. I'm taking today off to try to get some things done that I was unable to accomplish over the weekend, and maybe enjoy a little of the cool, dry weather that has finally come our way.

Sorry for all of your pain, htmb, but I think it's great that root canals exist, whereaas years ago they would have just yanked teeth out and given us dentures.
