Thread created by kerouac2Some of you have probably understood by now my passion for Vietnamese markets. Here is just a small gallery of photos from both Saigon and Dalat.

Want. to. go. there. What are the white objects in the right foreground of the first picture, please -- the ones that seem to have some kind of paper collar around them? Also, were these all taken at the same time of the year?

Right foreground? I don't see any paper. Are you talking about trimmed coconuts?
Yes, all of these photos were from the same season, same trip -- September.

Oh ~ maybe it's the way they're trimmed that made me think it was paper. These:

There are still so many fabulous threads I have not visited on AnyPort that lately I've been delving into many posted back during the early years. Bringing up these pictures of the Vietnamese markets was like a feast for the eyes. Your photographs of the people and market displays are enchanting, Kerouac, and I'm wondering about the year of the trip. You mentioned the photos were taken during the month of September. Were you using film, or digital?

Of course, now after reading through more of the Vietnam threads I can answer my own questions, and also see why you find the country so interesting, Kerouac.

That would have been my trip in September 2004, the very last trip I ever took as a free human being. All of those photos were taken with film cameras. I would always take whatever standard camera I had in those days, but I would also buy a few disposable cardbord cameras, including the amazing Ilford black & white cameras. It was with a cardboard Ilford that I took one of my favourite Vietnamese photos back in 1996 during my first trip to Vietnam. i450.photobucket.com/albums/qq228/kerouac2/Mekong1996a005-1.jpg(You can see it in context in "Mekong Delta part 1.")
