I got word yesterday that the big blonde bear was trapped by game wardens at the request of one of my neighbors (I'll bet it was the neighbor's fault, not the bear's). They put a tag in the bears ear before releasing it into the wild. If it gets caught again, they will know it's the same bear. They may move it again, but three strikes and they're out. If they can't find a zoo that wants it, it will be euthanized. (I hope it does well in its new wild neighborhood.)

What if it's Winnie the Pooh?

They'd better move him to the Three-Acre Wood, then!

What was left of the deer carcass after a few days of bear munching. I couldn't find it last time I looked for it. Evidence of the bear's bonus snack

I hope the blond bear lives a long life and stays in the wild, Kimby. I can see why we shouldn't be feeding the bears now. They get too used to it and then could become a danger. Or be seen as dangerous and so have to be put down.

More evidence of bear activity, though the prey is much smaller: ants! rolling logs over to find ants beneath digging around the base of old stumps tearing the bark surround off my well head! It used to look like this:

No recent bear activity, but I saw a moose this morning!

Another season, another bunch of bear reports from the neighbors. Today I finally saw my "own" first bear of the year, while out looking at weeds with a neighbor in the commonlands behind our houses. I almost stepped on it, I think, as it was so close when it scrambled up a tree. Needless to say, our weed examination came to an early conclusion and we retreated to a safe distance from which I took these photos. It's hard to tell, but he's in there, perched on a branch: I think he's a yearling cub. See him now? From a better vantage point: Zoomed way in (and grainy): Then we got nervous about where Mama Bear might be, and went to our own homes.

While the bear is fascinating, what is the purpose of examining "weeds"?

Trying to figure out the best way to kill them, of course!

Kimby, I still haven't seen a bear A friend of mine spotted one the other day crossing the road, I always seem to miss these sighting. Seen plenty of deer this year though, and foxes and other wildlife. Including a huge snapping turtle just two days ago.

I seen a bear for the first time when it ran across the road ahead of us shortly after we moved out here. Very quickly afterwards I got my driving learner's license. Really lovely photos today Kimby! Montana looks like an amazing place to live. Mich

Yes, I love it here. It's easy to take it for granted when it's all around you, but now and then I step back and say "wow! I'm not in Kansas Wisconsin anymore!"

This guy wandered onto the edge of our lawn last week. I "shot" him through the kitchen window. In making sure that this thread isn't on the photo board (since the image quality is not up to that board) I just realized this thread is on the Canada board, but these photos were taken in Montana.....

Lucky you, Kimby, getting another shot! I'm still bear hunting, so far so no see. This one looks more chubbier and bigger than the other one you saw.

Oh my! I would say be very careful, but you don't need me to tell you that. Great sighting! He looks like a big one.

Not full-grown, either. We are guessing a two-year old maybe?

Yep, I'd say at least a couple of years old, Kim.

Just saw a bear that looks a lot like my bear of last fall in #73. We've been working in the yard all day and I had just gone upstairs to change clothes, looked out the window and there he was, slipping between our house and the neighbors' on his way to the woods across the creek.
If I see him again, I'll try to get pictures.

I think you should build a little bear house in the back yard and wait from him to move in.

The only bear I have seen this year was a little baby cub, dead at the side of the Highway

Oh, that's too sad, deyana. Hopefully he has a twin so mama bear isn't too forlorn.

I hope so, Kimby. I hate seeing any wild-life injured or dead on the road. But it's something I have to brace myself for, especially during the Spring and Summer months.

Seen any more bears lately, Kimby?

Though we've had some warm weather in Montana lately, the bears SHOULD be tucked in for the winter. Don't expect to see any till March or April.

Yep, they must be tucked in well and good this time of year of course.
I'll be working out-side a lot this year, (once the weather gets a bit better), so I'm hoping I might spot one this year. It'll be the first one I see in it's natural habitat.

So taking my dog for a walk the other day, I came across these tracks. I believe them to be bear tracks and they were fresh ones. I followed them to quite a distance, but as I got further into the woodlands, decided it was safer to turn back. Kimby would probably be able to identity these tracks methinks:
