O Casimira, children don't belong in an adult world or adult interests do they?? I'm so glad you ditched the whole thing and didn't let the kids get other people miserable ;D Good for you!

Will any fava beans do? Our local Italians tend to be Sicilian or at least Southern, but I've never stumbled upon any of this.
Should we still pitch in to AR Food Depot?

We had plenty of Italians on the Mississippi gulf coast, too, but I never know what part of Italy they were from. Since Sicilians were the most immigration prone, I guess they were Sicilians as well. Some of the family names that I remember were Beningo, La Rosa, Dauro, Sinopoli...

The "lucky" fava beans are blessed by a priest beforehand. I don't really understand the AR Food depot pitch question either Lola dear....

Casimira, I failed to commiserate with you, but as you know how I feel about things like that, I'm sure you know you're bathed in my sympathy.
When I read your sentence, "I dropped them all off at the zoo on the way back home", I thought it was a grumpy comment on their acting like animals. Then I realized no, they were going to the zoo to view the animals.

Yes, I realize now how snarky that comment came off, I was still that miffed while posting it. But yes, part of the kids whining had to do with wanting to go to the zoo which they had apparently been promised earlier in the morning. It was however, my pleasure to drop them off at that point....

Ooops sorry to be cryptic AND incorrect. There was something about the Arkansas Rice Depot a few years earlier, I think.

Well, another St. Joseph Feast Day celebrated here in NOLA. Due to a huge work back load I only made it to two altars today, but, was determined to go no matter what. One was at a church where I had previously photographed the altar etc.early on in this thread. The other was in a private home of a family (2 brothers) also photographed in here but, much to our dismay had moved out of their previous residence of many, many years to an area of the city called Arabi. Still, we went and they were thrilled to see us make the trek. I was told that 46 churches in the Metro area had altars this year, a major comeback from the pre-Katrina era of celebrating this indigenous feast day. As usual, the altars were spectacular as was the food served and the sense of peace, calm and serenity I always associate this day with.

Many, many altars listed in the paper yesterday for this feast day. I will likely go to the ones listed that are in the Uptown area where I live later this morning. This afternoon my dear friend and I will make the trek to see the brothers in St. Bernard Parish.

Where are the pictures?
To be honest, I did take a boatload of pictures but, there doesn't appear to be much interest or enthusiasm on the subject/topic so, I didn't and won't bother. I guess people saw what they needed to see in previous posts, so why beat a dead horse or,in this case, a dead fish.
I did see and experience many new and delightful altars that crossed cultural boundaries and incorporated them into the old previously aforementioned traditions and, it appears most definitely that the community here embraced this concept whole heatedly.
Many of the private home altars have diminished sadly, and there are a slew of more communal displays. SORRY Kerouac, but, I am no longer going to the lengths I have in the past and have been enthusiastic about only to be disappointed with a certain despondancy.
And, I have found that all the time I take to try and document this umpteen year tradition that joyfully I experience becomes stifling and discouraging from my own personal affection and reverence for this feast day I uphold and cherish,

In defense of the previous post, I did peruse the pics I took and they were of the same caliber, however, you want to put it. I do not see the point in duplicating the jest of what has already been posted, (despite the absence of Bixa's cousins photos which for some reason are not showing up on my computer.)
Mea culpa good people, but, I really disdain replication of celebrations etc. unless there is some new and exciting post worthy endeavor.

St. Joseph's Feast Day upon us.
There are 80 plus altars listed in the local newspaper for the NOLA Metro area. (a major comeback from the post Katrina days).
We will likely stick to the ones we generally go to every year.

casimira, I've read every word in this thread; I just didn't have anything to add. It is fascinating and beautiful, and I love how they had fish-centric threads that got round the problem of celebrating abundance during the Lenten season. I walked past Nostra Signora della Difesa (nearby Italian congregation) but didn't see any sign of an event planned for San Giuseppe. The only sign I see for it around here are posters for zeppole.
I believe that Italy has more than one patron saint - St Francis of Assisi is definitely among them.

Sadly, there will not be any public St. Joseph's Day altars this year.
I am going to try and see if any of the altars in some private homes of people I am acquainted with will allow for me to visit.
This is the first time in the 30 plus years I have lived here that this has happened.
I am so dismayed about this I can't begin to tell you.

Well, events have been cancelled just about everywhere in the world, sometimes for the first time in hundreds of years. The most distressing is that even though this is the biggest world crisis in 80 years, there will probably be equally critical events more and more often now. At least you have a president who is doing a fantastic, outstanding, incredible job fighting the Chinese Italian virus.

No altars or masses here either... Thanks again for your efforts in showing these to us through the years. There will probably be zeppole though. I never knew Renzo's birthday, but the vet could tell me the week, so I celebrated him on the 18th of March between Pat's and Joe's...

Sadly, there will not be any public St. Joseph's Day altars this year. Noooo! Now, when we need him more than ever?! Saint Joseph is the Patron Saint of: Belgium, Canada, China, Peru, Russia, & Vietnam. Also invoked for a happy death and for fathers, social justice, workers, and travelers. sourceNo altars or masses here either... On a hunch I trekked over to Broccato's Italian Bakery and café.
Sure enough there was an altar and I got some lucky beans along with some cannoli, cuccidata and other cookies.
They had a beautiful altar erected and I was ever so grateful.
I think about all the altars that were in the process of being erected, weeks and weeks of labor of love intensive work that people spent their time building to share, it breaks my heart.

Well, we can visit the Vatican, though this does belong in Europe, or in Gardens, or in Beliefs? www.museivaticani.va/ Like all Vatican sites, in many languages.
