According to the weather forecast it is going to be 33° tomorrow and I've decided I will go and cool down in the Aare river. I'll swim about 1km in fast flowing water that basically carries you. It's heaps of fun, the best swim one could imagine. I found this little video on youtube to give you an idea of what the river is like:

Wow that is fast-flowing! It looks deep, too. Happy, does that water shoot down out of the mountains? The banks are so straight sided that they must have been carved out by the water over the centuries. Where does the river empty? Looks like fun!

Look who's talking ~~ the woman who routinely clings to bare cliff-faces in the Himalayas!

Being an extremely poor swimmer, this sort of experience is not for me. However, I have done some river "swimming" in pitiful little rivers that cannot swallow me up.

It actually comes from a glacier and it empties into the Rhine river. The valley was originally formed by a glacier and the river has done the rest of the carving.

You have no idea how much I would love to be in that river right now. My idea of heaven to be in cool clear water being rushed along effortlessly . Thanks for the vicarious mind journey as I set out to toil in the sweltering jungle. I am there in spirit.

I'm putting on my little "beamie" with the propeller on it right now. The one with the laser is in the shop for repairs. You'll know me when you see me. How was it? Glorious I'll bet. Go ahead,I can take it.

It looks so refreshing and clean and beautiful! I can almost feel the current. Are you a strong swimmer Happy? I know that you will probably swim with the current, but once I was swept into the middle and it exhausted me trying to get to shore in a much smaller river.

I think I am a very average swimmer Jazz. But I've never had a problem swimming back to the shore.

The best swimming is to be had in rivers, I love it.
Though I do suspect this one is icy cold! How was it, HT?

Oh really, it' easy! Come and visit sometime in July/August and I'll introduce you to our lovely river. All you have to do is swim out in the current, then rest on your blow up ball and enjoy the ride, then swim back to the shore. Too easy !

Looks good, there seem to be a few other swimmers around. But I still think I'd be a bit slow going in. Last time I jumped in a river was late last year. A friend of mine has a boat and occasionally he invites some people for half day cruises up or down the Mekong. We usually have a long, drawn out meal then return to Phnom Penh. On that occasion I think I was feeling a bit too hot and just stripped and jumped in, off the boat. The difficult part was getting back in!

Yes I always make myself wet before I jump in. Otherwise the cold shock is too big !
A cruise on the Mekong... that sounds nice too !

I bet the Mekong isn't quite cold, though!
