Well, if you ask ten different people how a young woman should behave or which places are appropriate, you'll probably get least eleven different answers.
It is perfectly fine for some young women to go out anywhere that they please and totally ill advised for others to do so. Since I do not know your daughter, it would be irresponsible for me to give any specific advice.
This said, I don't think there are any salsa clubs in Paris that engage in white slavery or have trapdoors in the restrooms.

My daughters have been going out many nights swing or salsa dancing, before they head off for college. Last night they went to Tango at the Ritz and took their first tango lessons. They said it was really fun, and the good tangoers are haughty towards beginners, glaring if they get in the way.
My Paris-bound daughter met a young woman at salsa the other night who had recently returned from six years in Paris. She said the best salsa club is in the 11th, conveniently same arr. as my daughter's host family, and that she was comfortable going to these clubs by herself.

I love the red shoes Hubs and I are indulging in a few lessons before our next trip to France, so I hope that is a tradition that continues in Paris. Thank you so much for the pictures. Just had to come back and add something my mother told me as I embarked on my first evening out at a dance club with a young man, neither of us having been before or knowing anyone that would be there. My mother told me not to go to the bathroom alone, to make sure someone I knew held the door. As I sat there sincerely wishing to fall into the floor, she told my date not to turn his back on strangers in the bathroom nor let me dance with other fellows unless he was going to stand watch over us the entire time. Apparently she'd read something about attacks in the bathrooms. Today I would be more concerned with keeping a close watch on drinks and only drinking from containers on which I myself had cracked the seal.

kerouac2 Another great post. What a wonderful image. Do you know if they dance until Christmas or new years? Or is it too cold? We will be there just around Dec 12 for 10 days

Sorry.... no outdoor dancing after September. (But plenty of indoor dancing, which you can find on the various tango sites.)

Just thought when you put your camera aside, or let it hang around your neck, if you ventured in with all those wonderful dancers. I also never assume you are by yourself... Cheers! Mich

I have to confess that I just watched my little video for perhaps the 10th time, and it warms my heart every time to see how serious the dancers are and how much real tango passion most of them display, even when they are lacking the technique.
Here is a little bonus video with unfortunately inaudible music but which shows some "non traditional" couples having fun dancing in a traditional situation, something which probably does not happen as often as they would like.

Wonderful, Kerouac. Thank you!
Did you get the sense that people are dancing with partners they came with, or that there's switching around and asking strangers?

In the tango section, there is a lot of partner swapping.

This is most definitely one of my favourite places in Paris! Last August we had an awesome cheese and wine picnic while enjoying the music and dancing. Kerouac, I think I spotted the Asian man with a ponytail (your reply #36), in the Utube 'Tango Seine Paris' (reply #9). Perhaps you can tell me if the dancing is on during May?

I went through the tango sites and discovered that the schedule is "variable." Normally, they try to start around mid-May, sometimes more toward the end of May if the weather has not been suitable. However, the main organizing site was complaining that this year there was no tango until about June 20th because the port authority delayed the authorization until then.

Many thanks for your trouble Kerouac. Fancy having to get permission every year!? One would think it would be just one of those Paris happenings ;D

In these so-called troubled times of terrorism or whatever, group gatherings have various security restrictions. All "they" have to do is come by and say that the music system is disturbing the peace, turn it off, and the party's over. So official authorizations are important.

Great photos from 2011, kerouac2! I wonder if some of these same dancers will head to Parc la Villette for dancing before the tango-themed movies on 8/20? Here's what I pulled off the website.

Thanks for that, Kerouac -- I wasn't sure if my limited French abilities would let me appreciate that film w/o subtitles but I think, given what I saw in the montage, that I will like it just fine. Here's hoping it doesn't rain on the 20th!

Basically, it is about a morose middle aged accountant who rediscovers by accident a certain joie de vivre.

The actor certainly conveys every bit of what you described, even in just those few scenes! I am all for discovering joie de vivre, wherever one might find it...so will definitely be seeing this film at the Cinéma en Pleine Air (or at the very least renting it when I get home to the states, if it is rainy on the 20th).

Obviously, it's the height of tango season at the moment so I had go there yesterday to check it out. The division into four zones seems to be permanent now, so there are four different kinds of dancing to check out -- tango, salsa, traditional rock'n'roll and retro dancing. More soon, but in the meantime here is the salsa video that I made. I had to replace the audio, because they had a terrible sound system and the only thing you could hear on the original track were crowd noises. It's a shame because the salsa area seems to be the most popular.

Now for a bit of tango. If your settings are not already on HD for YouTube, just click on the little tool wheel and change them.

Though I had seen a few posts from this thread in the past, I don't think I had ever read all the way through. Your photography is fabulous and gives a real sense of being there. Wish I was!
