Exquisite Jazz,a haunting quality about them.I can see the allure to go there in search of them.
Are they made from a type of rice paper? Some appear to be silk.I would love to know more about the history of the craft and how it has evolved.
The second picture in the night falls group of that cluster photographed from above is particularly beautiful. Thank you.

Imec and Casimira...you have come up with the perfect words, 'comforting, somehow' and 'haunting'. Many of these lanterns are silk, Casimira and I am going to our largest Chinatown to see if I can find one. If not, they are available online. I will search to find their history and post it.
Perhaps someone here has seen them? I think that Kerouac has, and maybe Hwnn? I love them. Time for me to visit Vietnam.

Isn't it astounding how an entire town can decide to create beauty simply for beauty's sake? Yes, I realize the lanterns are made to be sold, but still ....
So lovely. I could gaze at that last picture for ages.

I am so afraid to return to Hoi An now, since I haven't been there for 5 years. It is no longer a 'secret' destination, but I used to go there when it was still a sleepy backwater.

I am now inspired to go to Hoi An. I've always loved lanterns. I could bring back a fine selection for my garden.
That last picture - seems like Japanese kana written on it.

I have not been able to get these lanterns out of my head(not a bad thing). I have reflected upon there images since seeing.Maybe my friend in Thailand can find one for me to bring back.

I've not been to Hoi An, ever. But I need to go too. K2, I think it's still nice, the VN government knows it'd be killing a golden goose if they allowed development to progress too quickly. At least I hope so! SD, no surprise to see Chinese/Japanese characters. Hoi An was a very important trading city for merchants from both countries. One of the most famous sights is the Japanese Bridge:  |
