I go with the merriam-webster pronunciation.

Aloha from Kaua'i! Mahalo "kerouac2" - cary-a-tid and tel-uh-mon..........I'll certainly use those in September! Malama Pono (take care) Janet P.S. - I never knew the "ladies" holding up the Wallace Fountains were "telamones" before yesterday! I feel so much more knowledgeable!

No, they are caryatids. Caryatids are girls and telemones are boys!

We only have katydids around these parts.

Does this qualify? They aren't exactly holding up the building, so maybe not.

When I began my search for caryatids and telamones, I instantly began looking at every church I passed -- and I have never seen one. No lack of statues "almost touching the ceiling" like on that photo of Notre Dame, but never any supporting anything.

So I guess the answer is no. Should I take down the picture, or leave it as an example of what is NOT emblematic of the thread topic?

Go ahead and leave it -- after all, we welcomed some photos that were not from Paris, and also a couple of my own photos did not truly qualify because the caryatids were not actually supporting anything but only pretending to do so.

Okay, I am well aware that these telamones are not photos of Paris since I took them in Singapore. But from the first day I ever saw this building, I found it horribly creepy, as though it had been built by a satanic cult. And I walked up to it one night and saw that there was a huge lounge bar on the ground floor, just as creepy, dim and dark brown, as though they served bloody marys with real blood. Nevertheless, I have promised myself that I must actually go there the next time I am in Singapore, at the risk of losing my soul.

Wow that is an amazingly ugly/beautiful (and strange) piece of art deco architecture.

Great pictures Kerouac! I have to show them to my dad! He is an art historician and I guess he'd love them too! I have been only once in Paris some 15 years ago and I loved those wide promenades and the space management. In Italy everything is so compressed! Paris reminded me more of home!

I'm not sure about this, but if ithe picture doesn't fit in this category we can just remove it. It's from the Louvre. The blue and gold are very bright in my computer photo, but dull on my upload (which I've tried twice). Kind of puzzling as to why since I haven't had this issue before. The photo was taken in 2008, I think, so maybe it has something to do with the original camera settings.

Oh, great! Now if I could just figure out what's wrong with the image. Maybe I need a trip back to the Louvre

I have finally gotten on a computer to fix the photo I posted in #75 so the blues and golds are displayed in vibrant color. This has been bothering me for awhile The photo was taken in the Louvre in 2008.

Very pretty, glad you were able to fix the color.
I was wondering, is there a name for animals that support the building? I spotted a couple of those recently.
