That is so beautiful! Let's hear it for drones, which allow us to see such sights. I've marveled over your fabulous underwater pictures, Lugg, and of course your many great shots taken on terra firma. But these bird's eye views are yet another dimension of marvelous!

I know drones can be very intrusive at times if used incorrectly ...but they do allow for some great views. ( PS these are not my pics though)

It's a temporary trompe l'oeil installation by the photographer JR. I'm not really satisfied with these photos because the light was wrong. In real life, the illusion is better. However, you have to queue up for a certain amount of time to be able to stand in the correct spot, and you can imagine how many selfies a lot of people want to take. I may return and try again.

Paris is changing.

That new building does not appeal to me, but it’s certainly different. That’s the 13th? What is the purpose of the building?

The Tours Duo will be mostly offices, including the head office of a bank (Natixis) but also a luxury hotel on ten floors with a panoramic bar and restaurant. The project should be completed by the end of 2021.

Thanks. Paris is getting ready for the olympics! I guess we’ll see more new things before we get to 2024.

It could be used as a news photo of a collapse of part of a building. Why would anyone build something like that?

I’m guessing similar comments were made about the Pompidou and the Louvre pyramid. Still I agree. It’s ugly.

I remember both the opening of both Beaubourg (Pompidou Museum)and the Louvre pyramid. I thought the Pei pyramid was great and find nothing controversial about it. I'm still not really convinced that putting a lot of coloured pipes on the outside of a building was such a great idea -- it already needs renovation -- but at least the place had some merit attracting people who may not have visited more traditional museums.
But this building is simply ugly.

Strangely enough, I have read very little controversy about these new towers, except from people who are against EVERY high rise. Probably it is because they are on the very edge of Paris so they cannot be accused of destroying the Paris skyline, and probably the fact that Jean Nouvel is one of the principal designers in France reduced some other critics to silence.
The broken one is the 3rd tallest building in Paris (after the Eiffel Tower and the Montparnasse tower). It has more office space than the one in Montparnasse but less than the new court building in the 17th arrondissement.

It's true that I shudder when I think of the rectangular alignment of so many of the office buildings in La Défense that were built in the 1980s and 90s. It was only around the end of the century that they started experimenting with some different shapes. Of course the most daring projects were never built. One of the ones never built was "La tour sans fin" by Jean Nouvel.

I must admit that I admire the French architects (Jean-Philippe Vassal and Anne Lacaton) who just won the Pritzker Prize much more than all these "look at what I dreamed up!" show-off architects like Gehry, Libeskind or Nouvel.

I agree it is ugly but I have to admire the skills of the architect and builders, albeit presuming that it will hold strong. I also wondered if the flooring is tilted in the top half , but presume not.

I quite like it...looks like a mother hen with her chicks. The buildings at the base are the chicks and the hen has her head looking down at them. The white section is her wing.
Anyone else wanna toke?

Well, that is just wonderful! Of course the purpose is great, but as a art installation it is surprising and marvelous. Thanks for the link, Patrick, as I wondered what the material was. Did you come upon them unawares? That must be a brain scramble for anyone not expecting to see them in that setting.

Not sure it qualifies as unexpected but anyway wanted to post this. A church that was built around 1100, that was 500 meters from home when i was a kid. I hardly noticed then - i know i liked it - and went back to see it this week. In the middle of Marcinelle (close to le bois du Cazier, where 260+ miners died in the 60's). Charleroi.

These were all over the city during the summer. Some painted by local artists, others by schoolchildren. I only captured a couple so far.
