Jazz, all the sea creatures in #2 are fabulous. Where was that taken? God knows, somewhere in Paris. (sorry) These are all wonderful and I love the lion. (wish I had a zoom lens)

Almost caryatids, but not quite! Maybe they are candidates.

Nice. Love the wooden faun.
Greyghost's: The Lazy Caryatids.
There's a house in St. Louis, built during the previous Gilded Age, with faces of the owner's late wife under all the windows.

He is on the Roman Catholic church,Saint Stephens here in NOLA. I had never noticed before but, as I was sitting down to have my St. Joseph's feast day dinner, in the courtyard, there he was, actually 4 of them up on the steeple. So, I zoomed in on and took his pic. I rather like the wild fern growing out of the concrete the best. Good ol' spores....

Here's a couple from Montana, a place not known for gargoyles and caryotids: And the building they're on, which has been seen before on these pages: Sorry about the resolution, when I cropped the pictures to enlarge the heads/masks, the size of the file dropped from 2 MB to <200 KB. I don't know how to crop and keep the resolution.

Those Viking heads intrigue me! Wonder what made the architect choose them.....

Oh, somehow I missed seeing Kerouac's fabulous pic of the noble profile. That hint of golden light within the circle, the angle, everything -- wonderful!
Cheery, those heads look ancient. Are they finishing off an arch on each side of a window or door? They definitely have the look of portraits. Love the heads, the angles, and all the textures in the picture.

Do they represent the four seasons? They're beautiful. I love how the sculptor used four different models.

Lots of great heads here!
I tried to find out the architectural term for sculpted heads, but no can do. All I found was "zoophorous" - frieze decorated with animal or human figures. Some of these fit that description, but not all.
