I don't usually eat croissants - I love them, but they are very rich and a special treat - but I'm very cross without a coffee in the morning.

A soup I just made with leek, chicken stock I made a couple of days ago and (leftover) quinoa. Sage leaves floating in it; a bit of ginger to spice it up.

Soup, beer and gingerbread for breakfast? Blimey... It's all good food, and somewhere in the world, there are people eating it. How would you feel about canned baked beans on toast for breakfast? {shudder}. No wait! I'd eat that, no problem. What about black pudding? {double shudder}. Hold on a moment ... Wow, Mick, thanks to you, I've had a real eyeopener. I looked up "Full English Breakfast" and while I thought I knew what it was, this wikipedia.org article was informative beyond expectations.

"Full English Breakfast" is, as realised, a generic term for a large breakfast that is based on bacon, eggs, sausages and toast, with numerous add ons and omissions. I've read that page mentioned and it seems to give the impression that hash browns are a traditional part of it, or that's the way I read it. Bubble and squeak yes, hash browns, from over the sea, no. I can't think of a dish, and I'll be willing to be told of one by all means, that is so flexible, has at its core three or four ingredients but then can vary wildly depending on (UK) location. Around where I was dragged up we could also have oatcakes, like a pancake, but with toast, fried bread and bread and butter, seemed a bit of an overkill. They were more suited to being served in a way I tried to find a little to the north of me but never did, that is dried with a stew made of beef and cow's feet left to cool and solidify.
