I went back to look at the beginning of Tuesday's first semi final on YouTube. What I found sweet was the whole starting segment with the excited little boy and all of te tributes to Ukraine. We didn't get that part on the continent. (It really begins at 0:51 on the timer.)

While I wait for the second semi final in an hour, I noticed that the refrain from only one song has stuck in my mind -- Switzerland. I realise this probably goes against everything that the United States and Russia stand for.

Getting toward the end of the songs, but as you know, the voting is the most interesting.

My top two are Moldova and Finland, followed by Cyprus and Italy.

I managed to avoid it so far but our son is watching it reluctantly, his GF watching in Finland at the same time.

Perusing my notes, I see that I found Estonia to be the worst, followed by Portugal, Spain and Norway.
I always get everything wrong of course.

So, the Swedish singer with the scary claws won for a second time. Go figure. It's a strange world.

France has jumped the gun on the 2024 contest and already selected its entry. Slimane is an established star in France.

Okay, I confess that my television was turned on to the Junior Eurovision contest this evening, but I also confess that I was not really paying much attention. There are far fewer countries that participate, which is a good thing. 16 countries this year. One interesting moment was when I was down in the kitchen, but I could still faintly hear the television upstairs. While I was peeling potatoes, I thought to myself "that must be North Macedonia" -- and it was! I am becoming an expert on exotic musical themes mixed into international pop.
One good thing about this contest is that most of each song has to be sung in the national language, and also voting from any Eurovision country (even the ones that didn't participate) is free. It would be awful if kids (or their parents) were charged to vote for this, as is the case in the main Eurovision contest in May.
Anyway, France won again, and it is the 3rd time in 4 years which I suppose is a bit embarrassing. But France did have the best song. Some of the countries are still trying to push "adult" songs sung by little people, and some of the contestants (in a contest reserved for the ages 9 to 14) are trying to look like miniature big people.
Here is the song that won.

It's just been confirmed that Olly Alexander will perform the UK song next year in Malmö. Just for a change we have an 'established' artist (he's the frontman for Years and Years). Usually some barely known artist is shoved into the spotlight much to the chagrin of many British Eurovision fans.
Olly is also an actor he was excellent (imo) as Ritchie Tozer in the Channel 4 drama It's A Sin.

I saw that quite a few established singers have been chosen around Europe, so it might be a growing (and welcome) trend. I know that Belgium chose Mustii (actor Thomas Mustin) who has released two totally credible albums in the last few years.

Well Olly has been in the local news today _ I forgot that he attended Hereford 6th form college , but the local press did not. They were apolpletic as it just so happened that Ellie Goulding also revisited the college this week ( a well timed publicity generator I suspect)

So we have the United Kingdom entry for 2024. Apparently they had no budget to clothe Olly Alexander.

I had to look at this because the couple representing Armenia are from Lille, but the heritage of the girl definitely shows.

I like the fact that more countries are coming to their senses and are singing in their national language, even Norway.

I like the Armenian song. And the singer looks nice and has a beautiful smile. I can give it 10 points.
Listening to the 12 secs of each country I like Slovenia Norway and Germany in that order.
And the worst seem to be the Dutch. Which suits me fine.

The city of Waterloo is hosting the ABBA exhibition "From Waterloo to the World" at the moment, 50 years after the song won the Eurovision Song Contest. The organisers clearly do not hold a grudge since the Belgian jury gave the song zero points in 1974. But in any case the group's producer just chose that title at random when creating the song. www.waterloo1815.be/en/expo-abba-waterloo/France did not participate in 1974. It pulled just before the event because President Pompidou was being buried the same day. Back then there were only 17 countries participating. Luxembourg had won the year before but had also organised the show the year before and could not afford to do it two years in a row (Israel had the same problem a number of years later.), so the BBC hosted the show in Brighton.
