It feels sooooo good when it is pulled completely away from your face and neck, that is my attraction to having it done and once it is up and out of your way, it is one less thing to worry about. I do agree though Mark, there are more attractive ways in doing so. I prefer something like this... Cheers! Mich

That certainly looks good. I have no complaints with that. But a chignon, as that is what I think J.L. has, is better behind the head than on top. Hair stuffed on top of the head always looks wrong to me, and unattractive. The best, and sex on a stick, hairstyle when wanting it up is a French pleat. I can imagine reaching behind and easing it apart to let the hair cascade down before lifting the woman off her feet and gently laying her down on the bed to ravish her. But then I'm a male, what do you expect.

My objection to J.Lopez's hairstyle is that it was a big deal when I was in high school, along with the flip -- or turd curl, as it more often turned out. I think at least half the girls in our senior pictures, including me, had their hair up in a big doughnut on top our heads. I was in high school a long, long time ago, but not long enough to be interestingly retro. I love a french twist (or pleat -- a new term for me) -- too, too totally classy, and of course hinting of tumbling locks when released. flip

It must have taken some powerful hairspray to keep that curled.
I admit I am a sucker though for long natural hair and at best just put in a pony tail.

Sandra Bullock's two tone dress would have been so much nicer in just the ivory color. And a tad smaller on top.
Am I the only one who thinks Cameron Diaz looks like she spilled coke in her lap?
Emma Stone needs to lose about a yard of that red fabric around her neck.
Gwyneth rocks her dress, but the bracelet says "ace bandage" to me.
Jess Chastain looks like a bordello queen, dress and hair.
Loved Octavia's dress! (But wouldn't it have looked great on Cameron Diaz's body? Come to think of it, didn't Gwyneth Paltrow wear one something like it a few years ago?)
I'm not a fan of Natalie Portman's polka dots, though she looked good on TV.
Meryl Streep's dress looked way nicer on TV than in the still photo. Much better than her usual anyway. Look for the photo of her accepting her award to see how the dress really looked.
Glenn Close, lose the jacket or pair it with slacks.
Melissa McCarthy - OMG! (She should get some fashion advice for big girls from Queen Latifah, or Octavia Spencer.)
Milla Jovovich wore a pretty nice, Oscar-suitable dress.
Sherri Shepherd - did she really WANT to or NEED to accentuate her bust like that?
General notes - I didn't like any of the shiny black gowns, or the pale beige/tan flesh tone ones, and I didn't like any of the real short haircuts or unnatural red hairdos.
And can I say it again? Did not care for Viola Davis's new look at all. Bring back last year's hair and gown. Pure class & comfort in her own skin.

However, I found it refreshing that she went natural. Previously she wore wigs, but she recently said that she has decided the save the fake hair for roles and wear her real hair the rest of the time. As someone who once invested a lot of time, money, and pain in assiduously straightening my curls before finally accepting them, I applaud her decision. The dress was a wreck, though. She's got a good body but the cut did not flatter her.

Am I the only one who thinks Cameron Diaz looks like she spilled coke in her lap? It did look weird, almost dingy. Maybe it looked better in person? I did notice she had a bikini tan and her face was pretty sunburned.

It must have taken some powerful hairspray to keep that curled. I admit I am a sucker though for long natural hair and at best just put in a pony tail. I've hardly met a man in my life that actually likes all the primping preening hairdos, make-up, fancy dress stuff half as well as a simple casual look but we can't tell them that after they've spent so much money and time getting dolled up. Hopefully they are doing it purely for fun or to impress other women, if it's done to impress men I'm afraid it's generally a wasted effort.

Previously she wore wigs, but she recently said that she has decided the save the fake hair for roles and wear her real hair the rest of the time. It looked so severe to me, though, short and/or scraped back, and the color was very unnatural and I didn't find it flattering. Didn't realize last year's look was a wig, though. I assumed she had a good hairdresser/straightener.

Kimby: Sandra Bullock's two tone dress would have been so much nicer in just the ivory color. And a tad smaller on top. Bixa: I thought the two-tone worked, as it highlighted the really pretty detailing. Agree with you about it being too big on top. I think her hair was too severe for that dress. It gave more the effect of formal mourning, than just formal occasion.
Am I the only one who thinks Cameron Diaz looks like she spilled coke in her lap? *snork* Now you put the idea in my mind, but I'm rising above it & saying the dress was fine.
Emma Stone needs to lose about a yard of that red fabric around her neck. I agree. Don't know why that thing is being lauded right & left, approvingly compared to a Nicole Kidman gown.
Gwyneth rocks her dress, but the bracelet says "ace bandage" to me. Oh no -- it's perfect with that dress!
Jess Chastain looks like a bordello queen, dress and hair. Really? I think the dress is gorgeous, just that it sort of overwhelmed her.
Loved Octavia's dress! (But wouldn't it have looked great on Cameron Diaz's body? Come to think of it, didn't Gwyneth Paltrow wear one something like it a few years ago?) I'm sticking with my premise that it needed to show more flesh on top -- nothing dramatic, just more of a scooped neckline & less sleeve.
I'm not a fan of Natalie Portman's polka dots, though she looked good on TV. I didn't care for her look in the first pic I saw, then quite liked it later, proved that pictures do lie.
Meryl Streep's dress looked way nicer on TV than in the still photo. Much better than her usual anyway. Look for the photo of her accepting her award to see how the dress really looked. You are right about that.
Glenn Close, lose the jacket or pair it with slacks. Nah -- the jacket was good -- part of the whole Glenn Close movie star drama thing.
Melissa McCarthy - OMG! (She should get some fashion advice for big girls from Queen Latifah, or Octavia Spencer.) True. Whoever got her into that thing must hate her.
Milla Jovovich wore a pretty nice, Oscar-suitable dress. Yes.
Sherri Shepherd - did she really WANT to or NEED to accentuate her bust like that? That whole get up manages to look matronly, even with the silly open-to-the-bra business.
Oh, I loved her hair, including the color, her gorgeous carriage, & the way she looked in that shade of green. I did not care for the dress itself. However, I can see why she wanted strapless -- her shoulders & arms are magnificent.

pee ess ~~ thanks for the comment, NYCG.
Also for that pic of Natalie Portman, which was the one that convinced me that her gown did indeed work.

I can imagine reaching behind and easing it apart to let the hair cascade down before lifting the woman off her feet and gently laying her down on the bed to ravish her. But then I'm a male, what do you expect. Nice to get a guy's perspective. Yes, JLo's bun on top of her head looked silly, but it cannot be overstated how elegant and, yes, sexy a good updo can be. The picture you showed was a perfect example of what a Hitchcock femme fatale or sexy librarian would wear. I also like the windswept, slightly messy chignon. It looks charmingly careless (although it actually takes a bit of effort).

Yes, yes, yes, NYCGirl ~~ that is a perfect up-do for today's world & still works perfectly with any kind of formal dress.
Re: curly hair ~~ I was in high school in the era of the surfer girl look. My looks are more towards the beach blanket bimbo end of the spectrum.

It's that time of year again. www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/01/27/sag-awards-2013-red-carpet-photos-fashion-dresses_n_2563678.html?ncid=wsc-huffpost-cards-image#slide=20317801. I would say Jennifer Lawrence's navy strapless gown was the most boring thing she could have possibly worn, but she did set Twitter on fire when she had a wardrobe malfunction. Still, pretty boring. 2. I've said this before, but this freakin' tulle skirt-on-top-of-skirt trend needs to die already. Having said that, I do like Hathaway's bodice and the pixie hairdo is really working for her. 4. Jessica Chastain is lovely, as usual, although the dress is a bit uninspired. 8. Awful. Reminds me of origami. 11. Black is boring, but Tina Fey does look terrific. Love the belt. 21. Lavender hair is fine when you're a teenage goth girl, but grow the hell up already. 23. Don't know who this kid is, but she's cute as a button. I'm always glad to see age appropriate dressing. Hope I don't see her in a corseted minidress next year. 29. No no no. 32. Finally, some color! Freida Pinto looks radiant. 35. Damn it, more tulle! Ok, that's as far as I'll go for now. Overall, pretty forgettable. And why so many photos of guys?! Honestly, who cares what they're wearing?

I just re-read this thread and I'm afraid I'm just going to repeat myself --too many strapless dresses. And why the hell are they all in long dresses -- it's daytime! Only 2 or 3 in knee-length things. And, as usual, no idea who most of these people are. And the men's suits (not the tuxedos which are all the same) -- were they bought when they were thinner? All of them are popping out when the buttons are fastened. And Justin Timberlake's outfit 2. Anne Hathaway is pretty but the dress is awful. 5. Redheads like Jessica Chastain should not wear reddish orange, or orangey-red. Looks awful. 9. Julianne Moore should have worn something she could put a bra on with. 13. January (?FFS?) Jones is wearing a bib in preparation for going out for dinner. 14. Nicole Kidman's dress looks like bits of stuff stuck to tulle. And her hair needs to be combed. 16. Odd straps on Sofia Vergara's dress. 22. Busy (? another stupid name) Phillips may be proud of being pregnant, but that dress looks too tight across the stomach. 28. Sally Field looks great for her age, but I don't like the dress. Frumpŷ and old fashioned. 32. Frieda Pinto's dress suits her -- the colour is really good on her. 33. Is Julie Bowen's dress plastic or leather? Is it waterproof? 34. 44. 45. Awful colour, awful dress. 55. Angela Kinsey -- I don't like dresses that become transparent part way down. 57. Maria Menounous -- forgot the back of her dress, except for that little thing hanging down. 58. I think Renee Puente's dress is classy and looks good on her. 59. Nina Dobrev looks good too. 64. Morena Baccarin -- I don't like those greenish things hanging down on the sides. 65. Jaimie Alexander -- awful dress. 72. Looks like a mermaid. 73. Vitalie Taittinger -- my choice for worst dress of the evening. She was attacked by a large cat and her dress was shredded to bits.

Jeez, I am definitely a guy, because even though I tried really hard, I was unable to get past #25. It's all just a waste of fabric to me. Nevertheless, obviously some look better than others. That well fed woman whom I have never heard of should definitely rethink her dress size.

This is good ~~ this is very good! I'm not quite ready to unsheath my claws, but must have a mini-rant on the navy blue formals: UGH! Long navy blue dresses are for mothers or grandmothers of the bride &/or groom, but only for those mothers or grandmothers who are lumpishly out of shape & hope that some dull blue will simultaneously make them appear appropriately dressed but unnoticeable. Jennifer Lawrence, Amanda Seyfried, and other pretty young women are not only overwhelmed by the color, it makes them look too young -- as though they're playing dress-up -- and too pale. Come on girls ~~ get your own appropriately fun and youthful styles & show them off!

I was underwhelmed by most of the gowns at the SAG Awards and agree with Bixa regarding Jennifer and Amanda wearing navy blue, the color is not what I associate with young women, the dresses were lovely but they did look more suited for an older woman.
There is not really anyone that left more of an impression on me. If I had to say someone I would say Viola Davis looked elegant. We will see what happens at the Oscar's next month!
