So ..... all the chatter about sexual exploitation & lots of moral outrage splashing around, yet Sadie Sink (15) and Millie Bobby Brown (13 -- 13!) are wearing mature black and, especially in Brown's case, clothes verging too closely into the "sexy cocktail dress" category.

There was such a mixed bag of outfits I must say. Yes, all black save one actress I never heard of who wore a screaming red cut out dress (if you could call it that)and caused quite a stir which was exactly her intent.
Elisabeth Moss chose a fairly dowdy looking dress, Allison Janney's dress was dreadful, Angelina Jolie's outfit left much to be desired.
Nothing comes to mind that was a real standout in the taste department. All rather sedate.

I just had a quick look at some of them. As usual, some pretty tacky, some okay. I also saw the red cut out "outfit" somewhere yesterday. I can only suppose it was meant as provocation.

I had thought of it but couldn't find a site with a reasonable number of pictures to post. Oh, here are some: www.theguardian.com/film/gallery/2018/mar/05/oscars-red-carpet-2018-jennifer-lawrence-salma-hayek-in-picturesI don't know whether the person's name is Musician St Vincent or whether she is a musician but she forgot the bottom of her outfit. And the following Black Lives Matter person should wear something that fits. She is falling out of the top and her legs are too fat for that slit skirt. In fact, I don't like any slit skirts, including Nicole Kidman's. In fact, some of the older women look best with their more covered-up dresses, like Helen Mirren who always looks classy.

I agree with you BJD. The very second I saw Nicole Kidman and the "outfit" she was wearing I hated it. The top half of it was way too stiff and had a sculpted look to it. Add those long slits to it and it was just plain UGH!!! I just loved how Rita Moreno wore the same gown that she won her Oscar for West Side Story from sometime in the sixties. Edited to add: Marion, Marion, what were you thinking? ?? "Garbage bag" an apt description.

Who liked Nicole Kidman’s dress? I liked the color & the fabric, but nothing else about it. She is so ghostly pale that she made the color look overly bright, besides. I don't like any slit skirts, Agree -- there is something embarrassingly trying-too-hard about them. Ditto those stupid necklines plunging down toward the belly button. she wore a garbage bag to the French event. Garbage bags have better cut & styling. My eyes! My eyes! Looking good: Greta Gerwig, Jennifer Lawrence, Helen Mirren. Almost everyone else: oh god. They all need to improve their posture, too. What's with this thing of the non-shoulder straps hanging way down so a woman cannot raise her arms? Marion, Marion, what were you thinking? She's thinking, "I am sick & tired of being the best looking woman in the room & I'm gonna do something about it, by damn!"

I liked the pic of Jennifer Garner, who I find strikingly beautiful. Had to look her up on internet, sadly I know less than 10% of the people depicted. I think it shows a lack of interest from me. So : football, Holywood and cars : not for me...

Many of those guests don't know the old adage: if you have no taste, just go for plain & tasteful and you'll be fine.
You know what I mostly took away from the Royal Wedding? (Well, aside from the fact that diamonds are a particularly nice accessory.) Pointy toed stilettos are back in fashion with a vengeance. When & how did that happen?
Nobody wants to hear my rant about hose-with-heels again, do they?

I guess British hatmakers (I know, I know, they are called milliners) must be happy when there is a royal wedding, but most of them look rather silly. Bixa, it seems that on any fancy occasion those stilettos are obligatory. I find they are not flattering on women with fat legs and short skirts. The contrast with the legs and heels is too great. And the rugby player's wife falling out of her dress top?

It's her own creation! Note that the bride's mother was wearing hose, making her look just that much classier. One of the captions I saw somewhere while looking at royal wedding pictures: "Amal Clooney and date".

I don't really care whether stilettos are flattering or not. I care about the fact that they are a health hazard, and very damaging to women's bodies. Nowadays there are many attractive shoes that aren't stilettos. And bixa, what on earth is your current avatar? ?

I just find it odd that there are now so many stylish high-heeled shoes to choose from and women are chosing that particular outdated style that was passé for so long. Usually in "bone", too. LaGatta, I find it a logical and amusing sequel to my last avatar. It's just so, so ....... me!

www.tvguide.com/galleries/2019-golden-globes-best-dressedGolden Globes was pretty deflated, fashion-wise. I kind of liked Lady Gaga's ott dress, although I think she should have made her hair either exactly match it or not go with blue hair. Kristen Bell and Julia Roberts (#s 2 & 3) went shopping for fabric together. Julia told Kristen that she didn't mind not getting enough of the fabric to make a whole dress & just threw on a pair of black pants she had in the closet. Halle Berry (#4) should have used the fabric she bought for the sofa, not for her dress. Oh ~ Emma Stone (#6) got the lion's share from the fabric shopping expedition with Kristen & Julia. Emma put her home-ec skills to work to sew up a little number and embroider it. Elisabeth. Moss. Do you not have a full-length mirror in your house?! (#7) Lots of ugly dresses, although (#9) Danai Gurira's and (#10) Emily Blunt's were probably quite nice in real life instead of these awkward photos. (#24) I think Leslie Bibb should have done something better with her hair & of course I'm a big fan of accessorizing, but the dress is rather wonderful -- old fashioned princessy. (#26) Sandra Oh looks fabulous! I don't know who #28 is, but her dress is a definite candidate for ugliest & most age-inappropriate.

Sticking one's leg out of a long dress should be made a punishable offence.

I dislike the trend of deeper and wider cleavage revealing gowns. (Their golden globes were at risk of tumbling out!)
Kristin Bell and Thandie Newton looked nice.

Sticking one's leg out of a long dress should be made a punishable offence. It's such a clumsily obvious try at looking sexy. I always want to ask them, "Your first day hooking?" Kimby, didn't you just contradict yourself? Found more pictures. Dakota Fanning looks every inch the glamorous movie star! www.popsugar.com/fashion/Sexiest-Golden-Globes-Dresses-2019-45642781

Not so much a contradiction as a matter of degree. I like the lines of Kristen Bell’s gown, despite the plunging neckline, but not because of it.

Oh goody. My favourite annual thread! Looking at Bixa's comments here. Yup, Julia Roberts looks like hell in that pinkish, gauzy material with black pants. Halle Berry would have a transparent sofa? It does look awful, and her hair looks unflattering like that. Emma Stone is pretty but would look better in a stronger colour. I think you were right, Bixa -- the fabric store was having a special on that pinkish stuff. Elizabeth Moss -- indeed. Does nobody tell these people that it doesn't look good? Those short skirts make their legs look stumpy. Danai Gurira looks okay. The colour suits her. Emily Blunt's dress looks as though she got bored with crocheting and decided to make the bottom uneven. Billy Porter? WTF? Janelle Monai?? Looks like she came directly off the set of a science fiction move. Is that denim? Is Lena Waithe male, female or trans? MJ Rodriguez -- yup, those slit skirts are awful. There was a white one earlier that wasn't so obviously silly, but this woman's posture just screams "hey, look at my leg!" Yes, Leslie Bibb's dress is okay. She could go to a ball and dance. Her hair is a bit too casual for it. I don't know who #28 is either, but that heart on the bodice. Yuck. 29 is very pretty, whoever she is. Don't know who Rosamund Pike is, but I don't like that black dress at all. Bra manufacturers must be pulling their hair out when they see Taraji Henson and others like her. Saoirse Ronan just doesn't suit that kind of dress. She looks as though she should be wearing a school uniform.

So right about Saorirse Ronan, but eggzackly who would look good in those strips of cloth? All I can think is that everyone is waiting for a "wardrobe malfunction" in that kind of dress. Also, it's the same kind of vulgarly obvious attempt to be sexy as waggling the leg out of the dress slit.

Oh boy ~ red carpet clothes not in slide show format. www.theguardian.com/fashion/gallery/2019/jan/06/golden-globes-2019-red-carpet-pictures So much to shake ones head over ~ Charlize Theron's dress is so awkward, so poorly cut and fitted. Lupita Nyong'o's gown is really pretty and she looks pretty in it. I wonder if it's heavy. I see that idiotic style from last year with arms pinned to the sides is still around, here modeled by Rachel Weisz. No, Candace, no. Lady Gaga: I still like this, still think her hair ruins it. Old-fashioned Hollywood fake blondness with heavily sprayed swirls & swoops would have been dynamite with this. Irina Shayk is attractive in that bathing suit. It's hard for me to be mean about this picture of Phoebe, Sandra, & Jodie as I think they're all so talented. I like Phoebe's dress, but hate that look that the bosom area is just not tailored for bosom. Sandra Oh's look is perfect. Jodie is being eaten alive by something that belonged to Mary Todd Lincoln. I see Claire Foy got a 1940s slip from her grandmother's closet. Grandmother was apparently a larger woman than Claire. Heidi Klum's dress wants to hide its lack of inspiration behind some kleenex flowers. Hey! I never knew that Melissa McCarthy was the wizard in Fantasia! I like that pink construction on Regina King, but see gripe above about bosom fit. Oh Jesus, Nicole!!! Hi, I'm Glen Close and I'm not always well dressed! Does Amy Adams not own a full-length mirror? Michelle Yeoh wants to be Peter Pan? I adore this yellow dress, but Rachel Brosnahan doesn't quite have the personality to carry it off. Bright red lipstick might have done the trick. Bjd has said all that can be said about Janelle's Flash Gordon get-up. Gemma Chan didn't have time for her dress to be sewn, so just safety-pinned on a bunch of fabric. Constance Wu ~ you're almost 37 years. What were you thinking here? I don't much care for Jameela Jamil's gown, but the color is lovely and looks great on her. I'm exhausted from this. Someone else can take on the last three.

Not much to say about the last three. Why bother putting men in there anyway? Not sure what the sparkly black top on Timothee Chalamet is though - is it a built-in backpack?
I think Jamie Lee Curtis looks good. I don't like slit dresses but at least she didn't stick her leg out at a stupid angle, and the rest of the outfit looks pretty classy compared to most of the others.
I would still like to know why there is this "fashion parade" during the afternoon for what is essentially a Hollywood acting award affair. Can't they wear day clothes? Are they being paid by the fashion industry to wear this stuff?
Oh well, it gives news columnists and internet users something to comment on.

Rachel Brosnahan’s Prada gown is gorgeous - in (almost) any other color.
Jamie Lee Curtis forgot to put on makeup after rising from her coffin. Like her outfit though.

*stabbed through heart* ~ that color is what made her gown glorious, Kimby!
I can't agree with either of you ladies about Jamie Lee Curtis's outfit because I just can't get past the shoulder pads. You're right that a little color in her face wouldn't go amiss, Kimby, although maybe that's partly the effect of the bright lights.
