I just realized that Mossie is short for Mosquito - at least De Havilland. Real mosquitoes too ?

It is Australian slang for mosquitoes.

Chichester's life ended on a sad note though. He became sick at sea and rescue ships got muddled and confused and had collisions of their own. An unrelated incident caused a trawler to sink with (IIRC) eleven deaths. In the public's eye he was somehow to blame. His son and 2 others helicoptered onto the boat and rescued him but he died shortly after.
A couple of years ago a 16 year old girl from Australia did the "solo round the world sail"...but she had all the technology and the trip was mostly uneventful.

Today is the one year anniversary of the priest who got his throat cut at mass in France.

Chichester's book "The lonely Sea and the Sky" is a real boys own adventure. He went on to become the first man to sail single handedly round the world. his aeroplane was a Gypsy Moth and he named his yachts after it, the one he used for round the world is on view at Greenwich near the Cutty Sark. Not any more - she's had more adventures since. My blog | My photos | My video clips"too literate to be spam"

Oh my gosh ~ you remembered my birthday! That makes me *happy*. Thank you so much, dear Casimira. I always remember it most especially because it was my father's birthday too. He would have been 102 today.

I'm saving myself for The Big One next year, Mich. One of my sisters thought it was this year -- incredible since our birthdays are the same month & every July since she was born I've been seven years older than she. (She is a great sister, though.) To answer your question, I was brought enchiladas & presents this morning so the day took off nicely.

Since I often forget my own age, I for one, can understand your sister!
That is a great way to start your day!
Would I be correct in guessing an even more spectacular holiday will be your treat next year?

May I still chime in with a 'happy birthday'? I confess that I never pay attention to such things and that they must be brought to my attention by others. I have a totally fake birthdate on Facebook ('January 1st' -- as though anybody could be born on that date!) -- and am appalled every year by all of the messages that I receive.

I receive birthday wishes on January 1st as well Kerouac, but my birthday is not far off, it is on January 2nd. Whenever an age is requested, I either make myself older or younger by a year or two.

39 for the last time, Bixa? ;-) Naaah ~ that bird has long since flown. So thoughtful, Questa -- thank you very much! my birthday is not far off, it is on January 2nd . I will now remember that forever, as it was the birthday of a friend who left this world far too soon.

May I still chime in with a 'happy birthday'? Yes. Sorry, I got distracted by Mich's comment about her real birthday & didn't even thank you for your nice wishes, Kerouac. It's still my birthday for 42 more minutes, so still appropriate.

May I be the first to wish you a belated happy birthday, bixa? I thought of you on the day but didn't have my hands on a decent keyboard.
I hope you celebrated doing all the things you like best.

Thank you, Breeze -- it was low key in the best kind of way.
So kind, Fumobici. Yes, pleasant, but made even pleasanter by the great generosity of you all acknowledging it.

May I wish the latest belaeted happy birthday Bixa ?
I checked on this thread to post that I celebrate my 24th wedding anniversary today.
And it is also the 24th anniversary of the death of Boudouin 1er, king of Belgians (I wonder how I remember that date...).

They could have cancelled your wedding as "inappropriate" on a day like that.
