Pearl Harbor.
US enter the war. The war that began in : - 1937 for the Chinese - 1939 for the Poles - 1940 for the Finns, Danes, Belgians, French, Brits (and Commonwealth), Albanians - 1941 ealier for the Greeks, Yugoslavs, Russians I'm sure I'm forgetting quite a few...
But that none could have finished without the US who proved to be strong reliable and good allies.

It was impossible for December 7th to ever roll around without my stepfather saying "I was there." Strangely enough, it is the same date (not the same year!) that my mother married my stepfather. The day before was my mother's birthday and the day after is my brother's birthday. My brother's birthday always annoyed me when we were in Catholic school because December 8th was a holiday -- Immaculate Conception. No such luck for me!

I guess you cannot forget being there... He must have had some mates who were amongst the 2000+ deads, without talking of the wounded. I had never heard of immaculate conception being a day off. Btw, how can 8th dec be immaculate conception when the christ was born on 25 dec ? Took 1 year and 2 weeks of pregnancy or I am really missing something

Pfff. I read the immaculate conception on wikipedia. Another concept that I had rather overlooked. These guys really made for a miserable life !

Here is another question: why is maculate still used in Romance languages, but seems to have died out in English?

He must have had some mates who were amongst the 2000+ deads, without talking of the wounded. Actually not, because his own ship was not hit (he was on shore at the time anyway), and you really only care specifically about the people on your own ship.

Here is another question: why is maculate still used in Romance languages, but seems to have died out in English? "Masturbate, ejaculate, fornicate, titillate, fellate... maculate??" "Yes, your Holiness, it sounds dirty...better ban it, too"

Maculer is still used in french, but mostly in some idioms more than real use : 'la nappe était maculée de taches de vin...'

Yes, it is used mostly to replace "to stain."

Thanks! I'm always intrigued by those words in English & Romance languages that have the same Latin root, but the meaning has diverged through the centuries.

Today is the 70th anniversary of the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights (no, I won't mention that it was based in large part on the French revolutionary declaration of human rights published in 1789). It was validated by the 58 member states of the United Nations at the time. Several analysts have pointed out that a number of these same countries would not sign this declaration if it were presented again in 2018.

My maternal grandmother would have been 118 today. She shared that birthday with my stepfather, who would have been 97.

I am afraid I don't know the dates of birth of my grandparents. Save my paternal grandfather who was born the day Bleriot crossed the channel. So he would be 109. Must look up exact date though. I am always impressed at how the world changed since days that are so close.

Today, of course, is the December Solstice - Boreal Winter Solstice and Austral Summer Solstice. I slept in until 7 a.m., which is late for me. It was still dark. We were threatened with freezing rain, but there was very little here in the city and it was just ordinary rain when I got up, and I don't think there are many icy patches.
I'll write to friends in Chile and Argentina to wish them a happy Summer!
We probably WON'T have a white Christmas, which would suit me fine.
My friend who is opening a boulangerie with two partners brought me a 100% rye bread. It is delicious. I had a thin slice with butter, but want to save the rest for smoked salmon, so must pick some up. That is my idea of a holiday treat.

It is also Emmanuel Macron's 41st birthday. Is this the winter of his discontent?

It is still the 24th for some of us and the 25th for others. In this traditional season of good wishes ~ May your days be merry and bright, and may all of you and your loved ones always be bathed in light.

Our paper chose the 60th anniversary of Castro overthrowing Batista as Today’s Highlight in History, But I prefer the 156th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation as the top historical even on this date.

I think of the Emancipation Proclamation as the Too-Little, Too-Late Proclamation. Lots of cynical political maneuvering around that, very much including The Great Emancipator. Humph.
