On this date in 1985, Palestinian gunmen hijacked the Achille Lauro in the Mediterranean, shooting a wheel-chair bound Jewish-American passenger and pushing him overboard.
My parents were on a cruise ship in the Mediterranean at the same time, but because they had mailed us their itinerary before leaving on their trip, we were quickly able to dispel any worries that THEIR ship was the targeted one. Their cruising itinerary was somewhat disrupted however, and they saved the daily dispatches from the ship’s purser regarding the incident and their response.

There have been so many terrorist incidents, hijackings and mass shootings since the 1970's that one could probably publish a commemorative calendar with something for every day of the year, just like the calendars of the saints' days.

Twenty-three years ago today, Fox News Channel made its debut. They have not lived up to their “Fair and Balanced” slogan, but they have created a parallel universe of alternative facts that has made America fairly unbalanced today. Sad. That I can tell you.
There are signs that Fox’s steadfast support for Donald Trump may be eroding a bit. We can only hope.

150 years ago today: On November 6, 1869, Rutgers University faced Princeton University (then known as the College of New Jersey) in the first-ever game of intercollegiate football that resembled more the game of soccer than "football" as it is played today. It was played with a round ball and, like all early games, used a set of rules suggested by Rutgers captain William J. Leggett, based on The Football Association's first set of rules, which were an early attempt by the former pupils of England's public schools, to unify the rules of their public schools games and create a universal and standardized set of rules for the game of football and bore little resemblance to the American game which would be developed in the following decades. It is still usually regarded as the first game of college football.[4][7][8][9] The game was played at a Rutgers field. Two teams of 25 players attempted to score by kicking the ball into the opposing team's goal. Throwing or carrying the ball was not allowed, but there was plenty of physical contact between players. The first team to reach six goals was declared the winner. Rutgers won by a score of six to four.

Happy birthday, Kimby. I hope you celebrate in just the right way that suits you.
You picked "retired world traveler" as your ID. Are you sure you're retired from world travel? Nothing tempts you?

Nov 11 is also my sister's birthday. When we were kids I used to envy her getting a school holiday on her birthday.

School holiday on your birthday means you don’t get to bring treats to your classroom on your day. Not quite as bad as a summer birthday, which goes completely unmentioned during the school year.

My bro had his birthday middle of summer. Was a pain to invite friends. At a time when it was done by snailmail.

I always felt lucky to have my birthday in the summer since it meant I was always the right age for whatever grade I entered in the Fall. I swear I don't remember anyone ever bringing treats to school to celebrate their own birthdsays.

Treats to school would be banned in Oz because some of the kids are allergic to peanuts, some lactose intolerant, others cannot eat wheat flour and the crazies go troppo at the sniff of red cordial. Judy can't chew gum with her braces and Bobby faints at the sight of meat. Wendy's mother has her on a weight reducing diet (about time!) and Steve is diabetic and has to watch what he eats. Chris gets an asthma attack from eggs.
That is why Oz kids take a home prepared lunch to school and we don't have cafeterias.
I ask myself ,"Where were all these maladies when I was at school?" We swapped sandwiches (and germs...no little bottles of hand disinfectant then) and managed to build up healthy immune systems for future travelling.

Nobody brought snacks to school on their birthdays when I was a kid either. And as far as I know, it's still not done in France. Kids do have birthday parties but invite their friends, not the whole class.

No kooties here. I guess our "girl germs" which terrified the boys were stronger than our fear of catching "boy germs"

It is also the national day of Lebanon, corresponding to the day that France gave independence to Lebanon in 1943 (the free French in Algeria, not the France of Pétain).
