Apparently, since he knows that Turkey is still light years from being allowed to join the EU, his principal objective at the moment is to obtain the removal of visas for Turkish citizens entering the Schengen zone.

Celebrating French speaking community in Belgium. Never understood that. What should I have more in common with guys in Brussels who claim they are walloons than with guys from liege or Leuven or Antwerp. Total bullshit.

I'm sure that the worst thing is imagining how he would look now if he were still with you. Maybe he would have already moved away, but we will never know.
In any case it is impossible to not have heartfelt commiseration with anybody facing a situation like this, even 15 years later. Have never forgotten the family members who are no longer with me, even though of course they had all reached a respectable age.

Today, November 22, is the feast day of Saint Cecilia, a Roman virgin martyr venerated in Catholic, Orthodox, Anglican, and some Lutheran churches, such as the Church of Sweden.
She is the patroness of music and musicians and her feast day is the occasion of concerts and musical festivals.
Happy dia de santo to all the Cecilys, Cecilias, and Ceciles out there!

Yes, but we're starting to get a bit tired of it and have put it on a shelf with all of the other dusty historical assassinations, Julius Caesar, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, Abraham Lincoln and all that...

It is Saint Eloi today. Saint Eloi is the patron (patron in French leans boss) of mechanical workers and some more. Was a good opportunity to get plastered. Yesterday on the job… now less.

Today is Saint Nicolas which is very important in northeastern France, Belgium and part of the Netherlands and Germany, so I suppose I should also add Luxembourg. It used to be even more important than Christmas for the children because it was Saint Nicolas who would bring gifts for them in December. Now the children in that area of the world luck out twice, although I suppose most of them only receive chocolate and minor items today. One interesting detail about Saint Nicolas, is that he is accompanied by the Père Fouettard (the "whipping priest"), who is there to mete out appropriate punishment to children who have misbehaved. He snarls and waves his cat-of-nine-tails as he follows Saint Nicolas in parades. Dutch speakers are apparently inappropiately 'woke' because a lot of them would like to ban Zwarte Piet because he is often in blackface and they think that this is something against black people although it is just to represent the fact that he is covered with soot because he does a dirty job and has hygiene problems. The UN High Commission on Human Rights even got involved. So now, in those places he is often smeared with different colours (green or red) and is just called Piet instead of Zwarte Piet. Problem solved and UN pacified? In France he is just creepy but not covered with soot. www.lorfm.com/sites/default/files/styles/gros_titres_liste_830x370/public/actualites/44304/33025-metz-a-la-recherche-du-nouveau-pere-fouettard.pngAnd today would have been my mother's 99th birthday.

Today is the 100th anniversary of the death of Gustave Eiffel, who built more than 500 structures around the world, mostly bridges. It is remarkable that he also designed the most iconic structures of two major cities (Paris & New York), still standing today.
