Every year, more than a million wildebeest, along with hundreds of thousands of zebras and gazelles, move through the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem of Tanzania and Kenya, following the rains. In the course of a year, an individual wildebeest may cover as much as 2,100 kilometers. ... the Tanzanian government is preparing to build a major road through the northern part of the park: through a designated wilderness area, through the migration route. But the peculiar thing about this road is that it is not a case of animals versus people. There is an alternative — a road to the south of the park that would connect five times more people, and cost less to build. It would also be easier, since the landscape there is flatter; and it would not affect the animal migrations. And the northern road has been vigorously rejected on environmental grounds before.Click on photo above to read full story. Click the map to access an online petition against the new road.

I despair of this stupidity. The migration of wilderbeeste is something that I have never seen for myself. One never knows precisely when they'll start to move but if one lives in Nairobi with access to a light aircraft then it's easy enough.

Ahhh, probably not only stupidity involved but also money, no respect for nature, stubbornness. **insert the sound of the earth sobbing in frustration at this summing up **

I find reading things like this so incredibly frustrating. I cannot believe people are that stupid - it must be sheer evilness. And I would think money figures in somewhere.

Well, we can click on the map and sign the online petition, but do we really believe that has any impact?
In trying to find updates to the original story, I see that there are many more hits on google addressing the issue now than there were three weeks ago when I made the OP.
If corruption works there the way it works in most places, the whole thing may be a boondoggle. In other words, much will be made of the new highway, money will be dispersed, then, in great show of ecological concern, the project will be shut down, all concerned smugly going off with highway funds in their pockets.
