I went to a dance performance last night, SOUTHERN VOICES,6 choreographers (all local),6 dances performed,(each with several movements ). The show was 90 minutes long. Simply brilliant. Our dear friend Luke performed in one,so,it was that much more special for us to see. But,many (not all...) of the other dances were incredibly well done and made me feel I would like, need to attend more dance performances, and support these fabulous artists more than I do. Here's our friend, moving fast and brilliantly on the stage, the choreographer is also a dear dear friend. (I only took one picture because I was so paranoid of the flash accidentally going off....terrified actually.)

Oh, yes! would Love to see that.
My sweetie pies have been very involved in dance over the past 15 years, at our excellent Center Of Contemporary Arts. Most recently, here's a dress rehearsal tape that cries out for zoom on the girl center left.

I haven't been to a dance program since the death of Pina Bausch. But I absolutely must return to such endeavors -- for example at the Avignon festival next month.

There is a film with Pina Bausch training a group of young people for a dance performance playing these days.

I was pleased to see in NYTimes that Alicia Graf Mack will be performing with Ailey this season. She is a lovely dancer and a wonderful person who taught at our COCA for a couple of years, married a local boy she met while studying history at Columbia. My younger daughter was privileged to work closely with her when she was here. I wish we could see them in NY. this from NYT yesterday: from L Alicia, home towner Antonio Douthit, and the beautiful Linda Celeste Sims.

I bet the Dance Theater of Harlem and Ballet Hispanico shows at the Joyce would also be good, and less pricey.

"Focus" at the Joyce last weekend: 3 out of 4 ain't bad.
Eight companies, two per evening, performing two pieces each. We saw two evenings and four companies. Jason Samuels Smith had come to my daugher's company with his group for a week residency in tap, so we knew we wanted to see him. I chose the other evening based on YouTube of one of the groups.
Friday evening, Smith et al were excellent. He's a generous performer, allowing all of his troupe lots of time in the spotlight. When the music stops , like with their Song For My Father, you still hear it in the tapping.
Next was Trey McIntyre Project, just gorgeous, with witty choreography and great young dancers. . That on top of black bean soup from the Cuban diner across the street, and we were a couple of satisfied customers. Jason S. S. greeted us warmly outside the theater and accepted our congratulations.
The Sunday evening performance was more, how you say, problematic. Go ahead and call us ignorant midwesterners, but I kept my eyes closed for a good portion of the Abraham.in.motion segment. I'd have rather gone to the lobby and smoked a cigarette, and I don't even smoke.
At intermission, my daughter H realized there were a few people she had studied with in the audience, including Robert Battle, the new artistic director of Alvin Ailey. People were lined up to schmooze with him, for sure. We lay low.
Next was Kate Weare's company, including this terrific redhead:
Similarly battle-of-the-sexes type choreography. H thought the partnering was very good.
Prix Fixe for $27 pre theater dinner at Gascogne across the street: nice.

One more thing about the Joyce: There really are $10 tickets, in the front row. I called for ours the morning they were available, and got center front. These worked just fine, despite just slightly limited visibility and the risk of having dancers' sweat flung upon you. So worth it. That and a couple of shrimp empanadas at the Cuban diner and you have yourself a cheap date.
We got to the High Line, a few blocks away, just after it closed for the night. Winter hours are limited.

Last night we saw Hubbard Street Dance Chicago at our symphony hall. It was great.
There was a woman in front of me with annoying big curly hair who kept fidgeting to get the best possible view. I never was so tempted to thump someone on the back of her head. Luckily there was a false alarm when the audience thought it was an intermission, so my husband, daughter and I were able to move to much closer and unobstructed seats.
David Robertson conducted. He is so fun to watch. Enthusiastic and oozing elan.
Here's a video, if you don't mind a little babbling from concertmaster, with some of the moves:
Most of the dance, not seen in those clips, had some really cool partnering.
Also for one Scarlatti piece there was a countertenor. Otherworldly.

It's Alvin Ailey season in NYC, and in our family we skim the NYT reviews for mention of the dancers who worked with our daughters at local COCAdance. This year's poster woman is the amazing and darling Alicia Graf Mack, who spent two years here teaching and recuperating from an injury: I love her expression here. She was so supportive and kind, beyond her obvious star dancer qualities.

I backed out of buying dance tickets for our upcoming trip -- too pricey -- but maybe we'll see something fun anyway. Our daughters are budgeting lots of time for salsa dancing anyway.

If you ever get a chance to see Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan, go for it.
My daughter and I got to see them at Sadler's Wells in London recently, would have loved to go back the next night. Trance-inducing choreography plus very accomplished dancers.

Speaking of dance, my younger is loving London's opportunities for tango. When you find a place in St. Louis, it's mostly older couples who dance with each other, look down noses at single women. In London, she gets asked every dance at the club she's found in Islington. One British regular, she says, and the rest from all over the non-English world. She's also taken salsa lessons at a club down near London Bridge. (She wouldn't let me come and gaze admiringly at her during lessons, for some reason.)

Ever since Gotan Project put tango back on the map in Europe, it has been considered to be extremely fashionable. One of our café employees appeared furtively in a couple of their videos back then.
Gotan Project no longer exists but it has a new incarnation under the name Plaza Francia.

I had always assumed that the black and white video was filmed in BsAs, although I didn't think it looked much like anywhere in the city I had seen. But now that you mention it, I see "payant" written on the ground, and it looks like some of La Défence or some of the faceless office areas around Paris.
The second video looks like the kind of place that Kerouac would do a photo report on. I don't like the whole atmosphere of it, the "domestic" violence and jealousy expressed in it, and those short shorts and socks look like hell, compared to the baggy pants and long coat in the first video.

That's not La Défense in the first video. Most of La Défense is in much better shape. The video was filmed at Beaugrenelle in the 15th near the Eiffel Tower. All of those esplanades have now been demolished and rebuilt. I recognize Montreuil in the second video and -- ha ha -- I have been thinking about making a photo report there.
