My daughter and I stumbled upon this flamenco academy a few blocks from our Seville apartment in March. She took two lowest level classes, and loved it. I got to sit in, and it turned out to be our only flamenco exposure that week, but close and personal. And a bargain for the classes, I thought: 12.50 € for an hour with the dashing Juan Manuel Zurano and lots of sweet and friendly fellow dancers.

Nice. Another one of those things that looks fairly simple at first and then you realize how difficult it must be.
Just yesterday I followed a youtube link to a flashmob doing flamenco in a bank somewhere in southern Spain. The kind of place that makes you want to stamp your feet! And the man singing was singing insults about the bank.

What a fabulous form of expression, on both accounts. I find it fascinating to watch the body control of the dancers.

I am obliged to confess that I am impervious to flamenco. Stomping around and clapping simply annoys me. I place it on the same shelf as traditional Indonesian dances which seem to believe that everything important is in finger movements.
I went to dozens of dance programmes when I first moved to Paris and saw just about everything that Pina Bausch and Carolyn Carlson ever did. That is what I like.

I have been fairly impervious to flamenco in the past. Except in person, when you feel the vibration in your own sternum. Art forms that involve displays of passion (including a lot of French literature) don't tend to touch my Anglo/Celtic soul.
H and I didn't want to sink money into one of the Sevilla shows where tourists watch someone on stage. But it was a thrill being in a classroom with so much rhythmic energy.

I have no desire to want to watch anyone dance flamenco for any length of time, but think I would have loved to learn it myself when I was younger just for the physicality, self-expression, movement, and exercise.
