Full "COLD" Moon tonight. Tonight is the full moon?! Last night the moon was incredible -- almost too bright to look at. I was so frustrated when it rose. It was huge and startlingly clear in the still lighted sky ....... and I was on the phone & couldn't get a picture. I know someone who claims that the full moon is always the day after you think it's full. This is sure borne out now, as after night before last, then last night's display, I was positive I was looking at the fullest moon possible.

Hey Casi,
Nice picture!!!!!! I don't have one to post, but last night when we went out to cover our tender plants because we were supposed to be in the middle 30's we heard the coyotes barking and howling and the moon was a wonderful shade of light yellow. We are pretty well populated and we still have them wandering around the neighborhood. We have a wash that runs down between some of the townhouses so we occasionally see wildlife.

New Year's Eve is FULL "Blue" MOON ('blue 'when there are 2 full moons in the same month). It would be so cool if as many people as possible could try and get shot of to herald in the New Year. Regardless of your perceived photo skills or lack of quality camera (have seen some great cell phone photos on here),let's all try and take a shot at. Weather/visibility of course being the only good excuse

Here's a couple links that I enjoy: Astronomy Picture of the Day (besides a stunning daily photo, you can visit the archives of past photos, or use the search feature to locate pics of specific phenomena, like northern lights or meteors) apod.nasa.gov/apod/And Spaceweather.com, where you can subscribe to a newletter and/or get a heads-up by email about interesting sky events, like Space Station flyovers, sunspots, aurora events, etc. spaceweather.com/Today's issue is announcing this: PARTIAL LUNAR ECLIPSE: On Dec. 31st, the Moon will dip into Earth's shadow for a partial lunar eclipse. The event is visible from Europe, Africa and Asia. At maximum eclipse, around 19:24 UT, approximately 10% of the Moon will be darkly shadowed. Here's a couple photos from the Spaceweather site: halo around the moon (with fisheye lens) Shooting star (Geminid, i believe)

And another great meteor shot - with aurora borealis: I mistook this for the Skywatch thread and posted photos that were not of my taking in this Image Bank thread. Sorry.

Kimby, great shots there. The last one is outstanding.

Took this on the 31st - day after the full moon. Horribly exposed image but I like the detail that's starting to show through in the area where it has begun to wane.

Is it full moon time again? I want to try out my new camera on some moon photos, but today it's too grey and overcast. Maybe in a few days time. Nice picture, casi.

I'm going to have to start carrying my camera when I go out to get the paper in the early dawn twilight - wish I had a picture of the golden almost-full moon this morning, about to set over the foothills viewed between the ponderosa pines...

Gosh -- I hope someone with a good camera got a shot of the moon tonight. I just went out and the porch and didn't immediately recognize it as the moon. It's so low on the horizon and so bright and orange. This was taken just before 10 pm my time, which would be @11 pm central time in the US. Really bad picture, but you can see the moon's color & how low it is.

An unusual shot that.
Looks like tonight's the night! It's bright and sunny, should get a good photo of the moon later on.

Has ANYBODY here ever managed to take a photo of the stars? I certainly have not.

No..although I did post a picture of the moon and a planet beneath it. It wasn't very clear.
In order to take pictures of the stars you'd have to use a camera attached to a large telescope wouldn't you?

Has ANYBODY here ever managed to take a photo of the stars? I certainly have not. I have tired (with my old camera) and they didn't come out. I will try with this new one. I can't promise anything, but I will a good go (tomorrow).
